Red Sox Could Land Rafael Devers’ Offensive Twin in Free Agency, per MLB Insider

The Boston Red Sox shocked baseball by trading Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in June. The DH still had more than $250 million on his deal left to be paid, which is now the Giants’ trouble as the Red Sox parted ways with their star slugger, calling it a purely baseball move. The trade deadline is fast approaching, and Boston is touted to be in the hunt to sign some players to reinforce their squad, but they haven’t made any moves yet.

They are 43-45 for the campaign, just 6.5 games behind the AL East division leaders, the Toronto Blue Jays, who just completed an emphatic four-game sweep against the New York Yankees. The margins separating the top four in the AL East are small, and anything can happen after the All-Star break. Any two or maybe just one of these four teams can qualify for the playoffs this season.

MLB Insider Jon Heyman: Pete Alonso Can be a Good Fit for the Red Sox This Winter

In his latest column for the NY Post Sports, senior MLB insider Jon Heyman analyzed how New York Mets superstar first baseman Pete Alonso can be a good fit for the Red Sox. He made sure to let his readers know that the Mets wouldn’t entertain any mid-season trades ahead of the trade deadline, but come the offseason, Alonso can trigger his opt-out clause and become a free agent.

Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal with the Mets this past offseason. The contract has an opt-out clause after the 2025 campaign, which motivates Heyman to think that Alonso could look for a fresh new challenge for the 2026 MLB season, and the Red Sox could lure him onto the roster with a lucrative deal.

The four-time All-Star has been in an enriching form in both departments of the game this season. Alonso has a .287 batting average, with 18 home runs, 67 RBIs, and a .909 OPS in 88 games this season. He has amassed 95 hits in 331 at-bats, including 255 doubles and a triple. He is projected to hit over 30 home runs and register more than 120 RBIs this campaign.

If the cards fall in the right place for the Red Sox in the upcoming offseason, they could benefit from a move for Alonso. He can provide them with reliable batting depth and become their first-choice first baseman, allowing them to move a healthy Triston Casas to second, with Alex Bregman at third.

The Red Sox are playoff hopefuls this season and will play the Washington Nationals in their next regular-season series on the road at Nationals Park over the weekend.
