Red Sox Prospect Dishes on Backstory Behind ‘Barry Bonds’ Nickname

Boston Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell is quickly gaining recognition, and his teammates Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer—who played with him in Double-A Portland—have even nicknamed him “Barry Bonds.” Despite the nickname, Campbell’s impressive start to the 2025 season has already drawn comparisons to the baseball legend.

    Kristian Campbell Getting Big Comparisons

Drafted in the seventh round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech, Campbell entered the 2025 season with considerable buzz. After a red-hot start, the 23-year-old has already become a prominent name within the Red Sox organization.

Through his first 29 big league games, he posted a .301 batting average, a .407 OBP, four home runs and 12 RBIs. His strong performance has placed him among the top rookies in several offensive categories, with his .301 average and .902 OPS standing out.

Statcast data shows Campbell has an average exit velocity of 89.9 mph and a hard-hit rate of 44.7%, both above league average. In truth, his game differs significantly from the legendary slugger he’s been nicknamed after.

Rather than relying on pure power, Campbell’s offensive success stems from a balanced approach at the plate, elite speed and the ability to work deep counts. As of early May, he boasts an on-base percentage well above .400 and has reached base safely in nearly every game he’s played this season.

In an interview with MLB Network, Campbell recalled how he earned the nickname “Barry Bonds” during his impressive run in Double-A last season.

“When I got promoted to Double-A in June of last year, Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer were already there. I started off really well, hitting a few home runs and getting a lot of hits. One day, I walked into the clubhouse, and they just said, ‘Barry.’ I looked around, wondering who they were talking about because we didn’t have a Barry on the team,” Campbell said.

“They looked at me and said, ‘No, that’s you. You’re Barry Bonds now.’ And it just stuck for the rest of the year.”

While Campbell is flattered by the nickname and the comparison to one of baseball’s greatest hitters, he’s focused on carving his own path at Fenway Park as a potential cornerstone for the historic franchise.

After missing three games with rib discomfort, Campbell returned to the Boston lineup, batting cleanup and continuing his strong start to the 2025 season. His quick return suggested the injury was minor, which reassured Red Sox fans. In Tuesday’s game against the Texas Rangers, he went 1-for-4 with an RBI single—driving in Boston’s only run in a 6-1 loss.

Through 30 games, he’s batting .288 with four home runs and 13 RBIs, earning him the American League Rookie of the Month award for April. His early-season performance has already solidified his role as a key part of the Red Sox’s future—and who knows, maybe he’ll become the next Barry Bonds in his own right.
