Michael King’s Curious Comment Sends Red Sox Fans Dreaming of a Blockbuster Deal

The Boston Red Sox showed this offseason that they are hoping to get back into contention. They traded for Garrett Crochet and signed Alex Bregman, both of whom have made immediate impacts on their roster this year. Yet, they should remain active in player acquisition next offseason to bolster an already solid roster.

One player who will likely hit the open market is San Diego Padres starter Michael King, and he has connections to Boston.

Red Sox Fans Dream of Michael King Signing

King joined Dallas Braden on “Slab Lab” to discuss a multitude of topics surrounding his career. One of the questions asked was, “Do you have a favorite yard to pitch in?” King responded with, “Outside of Petco [Park in San Diego], I would probably say Fenway [Park in Boston], strictly because I grew up there.”

King also mentioned he went to Boston College and spent a lot of time at Fenway Park as a kid. He seems to feel comfortable in Boston, and that is something that could play into the Red Sox’s favor next offseason.

King will likely be looking for a top-of-the-market contract for a pitcher, especially if he has a good season this year with the Padres, but it will be interesting to see if the Red Sox will spend big on another pitcher after signing Crochet to a massive extension right before the season.

There’s also a chance the Padres trade King later this season if they realize they won’t be able to re-sign him. That means Boston could land him in a potential trade around the deadline in a few months.

Red Sox Still Looking To Find Their Footing

It’s been an exciting start to the season, and the AL East is shaping up to be a tightly contested division all year. So far, the Yankees lead the way with a 14-10 record, but the Red Sox are right behind them at 13-11. One of the best rivalries in baseball seems to be headed for another season of competitive play.

One player who has emerged so far this season is shortstop Trevor Story. He is having his best season as a Red Sox, granted, a small sample size. He is batting .337 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. Also, Boston is getting solid contributions from rookie Kristian Campbell, who is batting .316 with three homers and eight RBIs. His 14 walks in 76 at-bats are also eye-opening for a rookie.

The Red Sox look like legitimate contenders in the AL. They should be applauded for their improvements this offseason, as those will go a long way in making them a threat in October.
