Red Sox GM Explains ‘Difficult’ Call on Roman Anthony’s Delay Amid Kristian Campbell’s Struggles

The Boston Red Sox are in desperate need of a reset after suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of the Milwaukee Brewers, which included two walk-off losses.

Now 27-31, Boston has lost five straight and heads to Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves. With the offense struggling as a whole, fans are clamoring for the call up of Roman Anthony, MLB’s No. 1 overall prospect.

Craig Breslow, Chief Baseball Officer of the Red Sox recently discussed his thought process in keeping the 21-year old in Worcester for the time being.

Craig Breslow on Roman Anthony Remaining in AAA

Anthony was selected by the Red Sox in the second round of the 2022 draft. He worked his way up to AAA last season, accumulating 131 at-bats. He’s been in AAA for all of 2025 so far, putting up a .318 average and an OPS of .978 in his 176 at-bats.

With his numbers through the roof, it’s no wonder why Red Sox fans wanting him up on the big league roster.

“It’s really difficult to predict that someone is going to be successful out of the gate,” Breslow said. “You’re making these long-term, probabilistic bets that guys who perform the way Kristian and Marcelo and Roman have tend to be productive big leaguers.”

He continued, “But does that happen in Week 1, Month 1, Season 1? You don’t know. You try to round out their development as well as possible. It’s really important that communication between our major league staff and player-development group is seamless so we know exactly what their training, game-planning and routines look like so we can control as many of those variables as possible knowing what we can’t control.”

Part of what’s driving the Anthony conversation and the fans’ impatience is the slumping performance of rookie Kristian Campbell.

After a red-hot start to the season, Campbell is hitting just .120 in the month of May. With a small sample size in March, his OPS was 1.188. That fell to .848 in April, a number that still is very respectable. His 75 at-bats in the month of May have seen that number fall to .335, easily the worst in all of baseball.

While the Red Sox’s current slump has fans eager for immediate changes, patience remains key to the long-term success of the team.

Roman Anthony’s impressive performance in Triple-A signals a promising future, but as Craig Breslow emphasized, ensuring he is fully prepared before making the leap is crucial.

With the season still unfolding, the Red Sox must balance the urgency of turning things around with the careful development of their rising talent—hoping that both patience and timing will ultimately lead them back to winning ways.
