Red Sox Plan Short-Term AAA Assignment for Kyle Harrison to Refine Arsenal

The Boston Red Sox made a shocking trade on Sunday when they decided to send Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Boston ended a drama-filled few months with Devers, who moved from third base to designated hitter after Alex Bregman came to town.

While the Red Sox unload Devers’s deal, the return was somewhat questionable, although pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks do have potential. Harrison was sent to Triple-A affiliate Worcester right away, but from every indication given, it seems he should be in the big leagues sometime soon.

Red Sox Reveal Plan for Kyle Harrison After Rafael Devers Trade

With Devers being moved, the Red Sox sure hope that one of the four players acquired in the trade develops into a star. As for Harrison, he is in the minors, but he is reportedly only going to be there for a “couple of weeks,” per Katie Morrison-O’Day of MassLive. Red Sox Director of Pitching, Kevin Willard, spoke highly of Harrison and revealed this plan on Tuesday.

“He’s going to be a huge piece for the Boston Red Sox for not only now, but hopefully for the next five, six years,” Willard said. “There’s really big potential here. I’m really excited about the kid, and maybe just a fresh start somewhere else will help him and get him going in the right direction.”

Harrison is a 23-year-old lefthander who the Giants drafted in the third round of the 2020 MLB Draft, and there was some hype around him as a prospect. It is a fresh start for the lefthander, whose primary weapon is his mid-90s fastball, but perhaps his skill set will improve now.

Harrison appeared in 24 games in 2024 in San Francisco, registering a 7-7 record with a 4.56 ERA, and showed plenty of potential in his first year of decent gametime. Even though Harrison has been in Triple-A for some time, he is excited for this next chapter.

“I think this is a place where I’m going to get better and develop,” he said on Tuesday. “I think it’s just messing with another pitch, whether it’s adding something else or tinkering with a sinker or a gyro slider, and I’m just excited for the opportunity and what we’re going to be experimenting with here.” If Harrison develops as a star player, it will make the Red Sox’s trade look a bit better.
