Rangers Skipper Ejected After Exploding Over Ump’s Ball Call to Aaron Judge

The Texas Rangers had a hugely disappointing campaign in 2024 despite going into the season as the defending World Series champions. Manager Bruce Bochy is in the final season of his three-year contract, having led the team to their maiden championship during his first season in charge.

Bruce Bochy Gets Ejected After Showing Dissent at the Home Plate Umpire For a Call on Aaron Judge

The Rangers began the week with a trip to New York for a three-game series against the Yankees starting on Tuesday night. They have been on a good run heading into this contest after a topsy-turvy opening month to the 2025 campaign.

However, the Rangers went down to a 5-2 defeat in Game 1 of the series. Moreover, their manager was ejected midway through the game for arguing with the home plate umpire about a ball called on Yankees captain Aaron Judge.

Will Warren enjoyed an excellent outing on the mound for the Yankees, delivering 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up five hits with 10 strikeouts. Rangers’ starter Patrick Corbin gave up two runs through five innings but left two runners on base with no outs when he exited in the bottom of the sixth.

Right-hander Jacob Webb was brought into the game with Judge at the plate. With the count at 1-2, the pitcher threw an 85 mph changeup with tremendous shape that seemed to land just outside the low outside corner.

The home plate umpire, Carlos Torres, judged it as a ball, much to the disgust of the Rangers skipper. Bochy had apparently been raging at the call from the dugout, and the umpire signaled to eject him from the game before the next pitch was thrown.

Bochy, the most successful active manager in the MLB, coolly made his way from the dugout towards home plate to have a chat with the official. The 70-year-old had a long discussion with Torres, offering several hand gestures, but kept his temper well in check.

The argument Bochy made was not over a single decision but over several calls in the game. The Rangers manager felt Torres maintained an inconsistent strike zone and missed three strike calls on Judge alone.

The ejection of Bochy failed to galvanize his team, however. The Yankees scored another run in the sixth inning before adding two more to their tally in the eighth. The Rangers opened their account with two runs in the ninth, but not enough to change the outcome.

The Yankees extended their record to 28-19 to maintain their 4.5-game advantage over the chasing pack in the American League East. On the other hand, the Rangers are 25-24 for the season and 3.5 games behind the leaders in the American League West.
