The Boston Red Sox traded their superstar 3B/DH Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for four players as trade action heats up in the MLB. This move sent shockwaves through the baseball community, especially after Devers extended his stay in Boston by signing a blockbuster contract extension worth $313.5 million over ten years in January 2023. The contract came into effect in 2024.
After the trade, the Giants are set to pay Devers more than $250 million in salary over the next eight and a half years. The unexpected trade deal resulted from tension between the three-time All-Star and the team after Alex Bregman arrived and took the 3B role.

Boston Red Sox Not Expected To Change Trade Window Plans Despite Offloading Rafael Devers
According to senior MLB analyst and renowned columnist Jon Heyman, the Red Sox are not expected to change their plans ahead of the trade deadline despite letting go of Devers this season. He expects the ballclub to go after a batter to boost and increase the depth in their hitting lineup at this crucial point in the 2025 campaign.
In his analysis on Wednesday, Heyman said, “The Sox are going to be looking for a bat, I believe, as well as firming up the pitching. So, I think they are still going to be active. I don’t see them as a seller. I think they are a buyer. Obviously, they did sell on Devers, but that was more about the culture, and I do believe that.”

Devers was expected to be a mainstay at the ballclub till his retirement from the big leagues. The surprising trade shocked many of the Red Sox faithful, as they claimed the ballclub had had this incessant trait of trading superstars for many years now. With the Red Sox, Devers won the 2018 World Series, became a three-time All-Star, won two Silver Slugger awards, and was named to the All-MLB second team in 2021.
Rafael Devers Crushes Maiden HR for Giants Against Red Sox
In his fifth game with his new team, Devers crushed his first home run for the Giants during game 2 of the three-game series against the Red Sox at Oracle Park. On Saturday night, the designated hitter hit a two-run shot to the left field stands in the bottom of the third inning to give the home team a 3-0 lead in the contest.
Ultimately, the Giants won the contest 3-2 to level the series at one game apiece. They will now attempt to take the series finale against the Red Sox on Sunday, which would help them avoid a third series loss in a row after losing their previous two to the Cleveland Guardians and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
