Saturday saw the New York Yankees lose to the A’s 7-0, featuring a mere three hits from the New York franchise.
One Yankee recently taking some heat is Paul Goldschmidt, who actually had one of three hits against the Athletics. Goldschmidt’s criticism as of late has come after he snapped an 0-for-20 streak with a 104.3-mph, sixth-inning single off JP Sears. However, the first baseman went 1-for-4 in the game, giving him a .143 average and a .447 OPS over his last 24 contests. This slump from the veteran includes just four extra-base hits, two homers and four RBIs, as well as seven walks and 22 strikeouts.
Unfortunately, Goldschmidt’s performance this year has been a steep departure from his introduction to the Yankees, which saw him hit .343 with a .902 OPS over his first 56 games.

Paul Goldschmidt’s Attitude Takes a Hit
Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News said Goldschmidt’s recent slump has gotten to the player. “I have not played well for the last few weeks, maybe even this whole month,” Goldschmidt said. “That’s hurt our team the way I’ve played this month.”
The first baseman’s career-best season came in 2015, when he was 27 years old and playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He slugged 33 home runs and had 110 RBIs for a .321 average and 1.005 OPS.
It’s time to sound the alarm on Paul Goldschmidt. He has been absolutely abysmal since the 2nd week of May. Unless there is a LHP on the mound, he shouldn’t be in the lineup pic.twitter.com/U9WRXsEuXz

Yankees General Manager Aaron Boone said while he doesn’t think Goldschmidt is too far off hitting-wise from when he joined the Yankees, there have clearly been some swings and misses.
“I feel like his at-bats have been closer or similar. Just not finishing off some at-bats or getting some results,” Boone said in specific reference to Goldschmidt missing on some flyballs. “So I don’t feel like he’s been that far off. There’s been a little bit swing and miss in there. But I don’t feel like it’s far off to when he was really rolling. Hopefully, just a little bit of a downturn, which is inevitable.”
Over Goldschmidt’s first 56 games this season with the Yankees, he hit .343 with a .902 OPS. Let’s hope that with time and adjustments, Goldschmidt will get his hitting back where it needs to be.
Following Sunday’s play, the Yankees travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays; first pitch is slated for 7:07 p.m. EST.
