MLB Trade Rumors: Desperate Padres Target Red Sox Outfielder as Roman Anthony’s Rise Makes Him Expendable

With Worcester Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony hitting .303 in Triple-A, the Boston Red Sox may have no choice but to call up the 21-year-old soon. When doing so, they’ll have to move some pieces around, which is where the San Diego Padres fit in. The Red Sox have their work cut out for them during the rest of the season, but a trade with the Padres could perfectly benefit both teams.

San Diego Padres Targeting Jarren Duran

At 28 years old, Jarren Duran has been a key part of the Red Sox lineup in 2025, batting .281 in the last 15 games. So far, he’s only missed one game. With Anthony being an everyday player in AAA as well, those two could easily be swapped. Boston’s manager, Alex Cora, might not want to throw a 21-year-old in the lineup every day, but easing him into it would take a lot more pressure off his shoulders.

With the Padres struggling to keep up with the Los Angeles Dodgers, they find themselves two games back. At 33-24, their .579 winning percentage is the fifth-best in the National League. While they’ve struggled on the road, the Padres are one of eight teams with 20+ wins at home. A new home for Duran would be an interesting sight, as the lefty has been with Boston since 2021.

San Diego’s outfield depth is thin, but they don’t have a ton of high-quality prospects either. The Padres have made a ton of trades in the past few seasons to benefit them in the current moment, but not long-term. A trade for Duran could be another instance of them wanting to win now, but it makes sense as they’re within reach of the defending World Series champions.

Duran has consistently played in more games and at-bats throughout his career. With 102 games played in 2023, Duran crossed the century mark for the first time in a season. He increased his total number of at-bats from 332 in 2023 to an incredible 671 last season. In his first three years with the Red Sox combined, he didn’t have as many at-bats (643) as he did in 2024.

While his average has fallen in the past three months, Duran still has what the Padres are looking for in an everyday outfielder. The Red Sox might not want to get rid of him, and the Padres might not even have what they’re looking for, but it’s a trade that should be considered from all parties involved. At the end of the day, Boston won’t even consider trading Duran if an Anthony call-up isn’t happening before the deadline.
