Orioles Face Embarrassing Deadline Reality as Front Office’s Complacency Finally Backfires

The Baltimore Orioles’ 2025 MLB season record is 13-23. They are currently last in the American League East.

Baltimore made the playoffs in 2023 and 2024, but the team took a step back in 2025. A big reason for that is the lack of moves by general manager Mike Elias. Manager Brandon Hyde also deserves some blame. At this rate, the Orioles could miss the postseason.

Orioles’ Low Odds To Make the 2025 MLB Postseason

If the MLB season ended today, the Orioles would miss the playoffs. There is still plenty of time for them to turn things around, but the odds are stacked against them even if they were to. Jon Morosi of MLB Network reported the odds of the Orioles making the postseason in 2025: “The Orioles have the 3rd-lowest chance of making the playoffs among all AL teams, per @fangraphs simulations.

If the Orioles become sellers at the trade deadline, it’ll be interesting to see who gets dealt and what prospects they could bring back. Baltimore already has one of the top farm systems in baseball, and trading veterans would only make it stronger. Elias has always valued hanging onto prospects.

Baltimore currently has two of the top 15 prospects according to MLB’s prospect rankings, catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo and third baseman/first baseman Coby Mayo, who rank 10th and 11th, respectively.

But he didn’t do enough this past offseason to trade some of those prospects for starting pitching or other roster help. If the Orioles miss the playoffs, Elias might not return as general manager in 2026. Baltimore may need a new GM who is willing to push them over the top and make the necessary moves to win. Hyde could also take some heat for the front office’s decisions.

He has been in the Orioles’ front office since the 2019 season. Elias was with the Houston Astros from 2012 to 2018. He oversaw a rebuild in Houston, eventually leading to them winning the 2017 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. For some reason, Elias hasn’t done enough with signing free agents or trading for pitchers. His prospect-hugging technique is going to cost him his job.

Missing out on the postseason would be a disappointment for the organization after consecutive playoff appearances. In 2023, Baltimore lost in the AL Divisional Series, getting swept 3-0. The next year, they lost in the Wild Card round, losing 2-0 as well. After six seasons of finishing fourth or fifth in the AL East, fortunes seemed to be turning. Now, it is not so certain.
