Logan O’Hoppe Struggles to Hold Back Emotion After Angels’ Ron Washington’s Season Exit Over Health Concerns

Catcher Logan O’Hoppe has been with the Los Angeles Angels since his trade from the Philadelphia Phillies in 2022. The 25-year-old shares a strong bond with manager Ron Washington, who was recently announced to miss the remainder of the 2025 season due to undisclosed health issues.

At 41-41, the Angels still hold a fighting chance in the American League West, but Washington’s absence highlights just how much of an impact the skipper has had on the team.

Logan O’Hoppe Delivers Heartfelt Message to Washington

Currently hitting .233, O’Hoppe has seen a significant improvement in his power. He hit 20 home runs last season in 479 at-bats and has already matched 17 this season in just 240 at-bats. His slugging percentage has risen from .409 to .463, along with a slight increase in his OPS.

However, that’s taking a backseat as O’Hoppe is keeping Washington close in his thoughts.

“It’s more than baseball when you hear the news. You want to think of the advice he gives you when you’re not feeling so good, and can’t play,” O’Hoppe said. “We just hope he’s healthy and getting better, you know? I hope this isn’t taken the wrong way, but we don’t care about any of the baseball side of it right now. We hope he’s all right and gets the help he needs.”

Dealing with an undisclosed medical issue, the 73-year-old Washington must prioritize his health over his role with the Angels. Although his tenure with the team has been brief, he is a proven winner, having been part of the 2021 Atlanta Braves World Series team. This marks his second time managing, but his time with the Angels is now being cut short.

Bench coach Ray Montgomery has stepped in as the team’s interim manager.

The 55-year-old had a short playing career in MLB with the Houston Astros before moving into coaching. After a brief tenure as director of player personnel, he was appointed bench coach for the Angels in 2022. Since then, he has impressed team leadership enough to earn the interim manager role for the remainder of the season.

The Angels currently sit third in the AL West, seven and a half games behind division leaders, the Houston Astros. They are just one game back from the final wild card spot in the American League.

In Washington’s absence, Montgomery will look to rally the team for a strong second half, hoping to secure their first postseason appearance since 2014.
