MLB Players Reveal Why Marlins’ Bizarre Road Meals Are Becoming a Cautionary Tale for the League

The Miami Marlins are among MLB’s worst teams by attendance, with the two teams below them playing in minor league stadiums. With an average of 11,648 fans per home game, the Marlins’ attendance is a symptom of their incompetence and their market’s limitations.

In a recent anonymous player poll, some revealing information came about the team’s meals on the road.

Miami Marlins Have Stopped at Subway Before for a Meal on the Road

While many would argue that there’s nothing wrong with a Subway sandwich, it’s quite an odd choice for a professional baseball team. Minor league baseball might be different, as those players fight for their lives for little to no money and have to do what they can. For a big-league team, though, stopping at Subway or having it catered is uncommon.

One player poll from The Athletic revealed the extent of Miami’s struggles.

The quote read, “I’ve heard specific things about them getting, like, Subway sandwiches on the road sometimes. It’s little stuff like that where it’s like, we’re in the big leagues. Cheap stuff. It’s a billion-dollar industry. Let’s be a little better than that.”

Regarding the team itself, another person responded, “Miami has no direction, and all their prospects are 17, so they’re seven years away from doing anything.”

With players like Milwaukee Brewers pitcher  Jacob Misiorowski and Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony making their MLB debuts at 23 and 21 years old, respectively, several prospects play in the big leagues at just over 20. For the Marlins, a 17-year-old prospect isn’t going to get them anywhere, and it certainly won’t help them escape an 18.5-game deficit in the NL East.

The Athletics had the worst reputation among players, but 25 of the 115 responses indicated that the Marlins aren’t far behind. That is still a large difference from the 39 times the A’s were selected, but Miami was only one of five teams to receive 20+ votes against them.

Three anonymous players said they would love to play for manager Clayton McCullough. Of the 121 responses, Texas Rangers skipper Bruce Bochy received the most votes with 20, but McCullough’s three votes put him higher than expected. These players are not allowed to vote for their manager, so three players from a different team sent votes his way.

Those votes are a testament to how the front office is handled compared to the team’s day-to-day manager. McCullough is clearly beloved by some, but the team has not put him in a position to succeed. If the Marlins continue to eat Subway on the road, it wouldn’t be surprising to find themselves ranked as low as the A’s in the next player poll.
