MLB Insider Makes Blunt Verdict on Jarren Duran-Vaughn Grissom Trade Rumor

The Boston Red Sox didn’t expect to be here in mid-June, stuck with a 34-36 record and hovering in fourth place in the AL East. The season hasn’t spiraled out of control, but it also hasn’t taken off, and that uncertainty is casting a long shadow over the front office as the trade deadline starts to creep into focus.

At the center of that uncertainty is outfielder Jarren Duran.

Trade Scenario Buzz: What Will Boston Do?

Duran has become one of the Red Sox’s most electric players, both at the plate and in the field. He brings speed and has taken a noticeable step forward this year. But despite his rise, the Red Sox are reportedly open to moving him if the right package comes along, and the latest team showing interest? The Atlanta Braves.

According to reports, Boston and Atlanta have at least had conversations about a possible swap involving former Red Sox ace Chris Sale, who’s now enjoying a strong season in Atlanta. Sale is coming off a Cy Young-winning year in 2024 and hasn’t slowed down much in 2025, with a 2.79 ERA in 14 starts. On paper, it’s a move that could make sense for Boston, whose rotation has struggled all season.

But for fans who remember Sale’s injury-plagued final years in Boston, it’s not exactly an easy sell. MLB insider Lou Merloni weighed in on the buzz and didn’t hold back. “Duran for Vaughn Grissom straight up is an interesting way to look at it. Never happen,” Merloni said, calling into question the fairness of some proposed trade scenarios.

While Grissom isn’t the primary name being floated, Sale is. Merloni’s point still rings true: if Boston is giving up Duran, they better be getting something big in return. And that’s where the uneasiness creeps in.

Buyers Or Sellers, Boston Needs Change

In addition to being a talented player, Duran has integrated himself into this team’s culture. It would hurt to trade him, particularly during a season with no clear path. Supporters have seen him develop, overcome setbacks, and emerge as one of the league’s most dynamic outfielders. It seems risky at best to give that up for a pitcher with a lengthy history of injuries, especially one as good as Sale.

Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the Red Sox require rotational assistance. They must quickly improve their 4.08 ERA, which is among the worst in the majors, if they hope to remain in the running for the postseason. That might entail taking a chance on a reunion with Sale. Perhaps it means trusting the existing group and clinging to Duran.

Either way, the trade deadline is coming. And with one of their most valuable assets in Duran drawing attention, the Red Sox are going to have to make a tough decision sooner rather than later.
