MLB Insider Gets Honest About White Sox’s Plan To Hand Power to Justin Ishbia

After decades of poor performance and inconsistency, the Chicago White Sox might finally be starting a much-needed new chapter. The 89-year-old chairman of the team has the option to sell it to billionaire Justin Ishbia between 2029 and 2033 as part of a succession arrangement with longtime owner Jerry Reinsdorf. Ishbia will have the chance to take over himself after the 2034 season if Reinsdorf doesn’t use that option.

New Owners, Potential for New Culture

While the transition isn’t immediate, the long-term implications are significant, not just for the organization but for a fan base that has endured disappointment for generations.

Former catcher and fan-favorite A.J. Pierzynski summed up the sentiment best.

“I don’t know what the answer is there, but the Ishbia have been talked about for a long time buying the White Sox cuz they’re White Sox fans so I’m all for it. What do I want to see? I want see them figure out a way to sustain success unlike what the White Sox have done for about the last 125 years of their existence.”

Pierzynski’s remarks are significant. He played a significant role in the 2005 squad that won the franchise’s only World Series since 1917. But there hasn’t been anything to rejoice over since. Despite being headquartered in one of the nation’s biggest sports markets, the White Sox have only made seven postseason appearances in the last forty-four years. The team currently has one of baseball’s worst records (20-43), following a historically dismal 41-121 finish in 2024, which has only made the frustration worse.

Justin Ishbia Brings Experience to the Mound

Professional sports are nothing new to Ishbia, who has been a minority owner since 2021. He collaborates closely with his brother Mat Ishbia, who owns the Phoenix Suns and Mercury and is also active in Nashville SC of Major League Soccer. Their lifetime devotion to the White Sox, a unique emotional bond that may result in genuine dedication to creating a winner, adds even more intrigue to the Ishbia connection.

Reinsdorf left behind a complex legacy. Even though he was instrumental in winning a championship and stayed with the team for almost 50 years, his reign has mostly been characterized by unfulfilled expectations. The organization may now have a fresh start thanks to his succession plan, which also presents an opportunity to reconsider the White Sox’s structure, management, and leadership.

Fans will have to wait for the time being. With owners who are knowledgeable about the industry and genuinely care about the jersey’s badge, this arrangement gives fans faith that the team may eventually reach its full potential.
