MLB Injury News: Giants Suffer Big Setback As Matt Chapman Placed on IL Before Key Dodgers Clash

After diving back to first base in the bottom of the eighth inning of the San Francisco Giants’ 4-3 victory against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, third baseman Matt Chapman jammed his throwing hand. After being picked off to finish the inning, he grimaced right away.

Manager Bob Melvin and team trainer Anthony Reyes gave him a quick evaluation, but he managed to continue in the game and play third in the top of the ninth.

Although the results of the X-rays were negative, Chapman claimed that after the game, his hand was beginning to feel stiff, and at first, he was concerned that he might have injured the ligaments in his index, middle, and ring fingers.

Matt Chapman Sidelined for 10 Days

Before Tuesday night’s series opening against the Rockies at Coors Field, the Giants promoted infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento and placed third baseman Chapman on the 10-day injured list due to soreness in his right hand.

The move is retroactive to Monday, June 9.

The Giants will be devastated by Chapman’s departure. Over his first 65 games of the season, the five-time Gold Glove third baseman was hitting .243 with an OPS of .812 and a team-high 12 home runs.

Chapman’s two-run home run on Saturday gave the Giants an exciting 3-2 victory over the Braves, even though they were down to their final out in yet another one-run game.

On Saturday, the Giants played their sixth straight one-run game, the longest run since they won their last World Series in 2014, which lasted eight games. They are tied with the Braves for the most one-run games in the big leagues with 27 this season.

San Francisco (37-28) leads the Majors with eight walk-off victories this season and has won four straight. The team has the most one-run victories in the major leagues with 15, 12 of which have occurred at home.

In his 29 games this season, Koss, a 27-year-old infielder who made his Major League Baseball debut with San Francisco earlier in the season, is hitting .219/.275/.266. Last week, the native of Riverside, California, was optioned back to Sacramento.

With a three-game series against the unfortunate Colorado Rockies beginning Tuesday night in Denver, the Giants are in a strong position to continue extending their current winning streak.

After attending a pivotal series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco will play the Cleveland Guardians at home. Chapman will be eligible to return for the last game on Thursday, June 19.
