Mike Shildt Breaks Silence After Heated Night of HBPs Involving Shohei Ohtani and Fernando Tatís Jr.

After a heated argument on the field, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was ejected during the team’s 8-6 win after San Diego Padres pitcher Randy Vasquez hit Shohei Ohtani in the leg with a pitch in the third inning.

Roberts saw this move as retaliation after Dodgers reliever Lou Trivino hit Fernando Tatís Jr. in the top of the third inning, eliciting loud jeers from the audience.

The umpires issued warnings to both benches. Roberts and crew chief Marvin Hudson exchanged words down the third base line after Roberts came out of the dugout. Frustrated that his team was given a warning, Roberts grew more animated and made emphatic gestures.

Mike Shildt Offers His Thoughts on the Whole Issue

In an audio clip shared by 97.3 The Fan, Padres manager Mike Shildt explains to fans what really happened during the game. When asked about a warning being issued to both teams, Shildt said, “I think it was appropriate to air in the side of caution.”

”Things happen in baseball, guys are trying to pitch in, guys are trying to make quality pitches. I understand what they have to do at that point and there wasn’t any complaining from my side,” Shildt added.

While Shildt stayed relatively calm when things heated up on Tuesday, he was much more animated during Monday night’s series opener.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Padres pitcher Dylan Cease hit Andy Pages with a pitch, which Pages was not happy about. Afterward, Pages glared at Cease, and although he didn’t move toward the mound, tensions between the two rivals escalated.

In a response to Pages’ actions, Shildt was caught on camera shouting at Pages from the dugout, “Who the f*** do you think you are?”

The video went viral on social media and eventually made its way to Pages, who explained that he saw the video in the morning but didn’t pay it too much attention.

In response to Shildt and his team, Pages went 4-for-4 with two home runs, three runs, and three RBIs in their Tuesday victory.

“I have a lot of confidence in the work I’m putting in,” Pages said. “I’m finding pitches in my zone and hitting them as well as I can.”
