The New York Mets have been riding high all season, and a large part of that success has stemmed from their rare luck with team health. But that streak took a major hit during Wednesday’s game against the Washington Nationals, when an errant throw from Pete Alonso led to an unfortunate injury for breakout ace Kodai Senga.

Routine Play Backfires on Ace
Alonso fielded a ground ball easily in what should have been a routine play. However, Senga, who had run over to cover the bag, had to jump in the air to avoid an awful error when his throw to first flew over Senga’s head. Senga grabbed his hamstring as soon as he landed awkwardly. One of the most important players for the Mets was quickly assisted off the field as trainers hurried out.

Alonso, visibly shaken, put his hands on his head in disbelief. Though unintentional, the mistake proved costly. Senga, who has been making a strong case for NL Cy Young consideration, may now be facing time on the injured list. His numbers have been among the best in baseball: a 7-3 record, a dazzling 1.47 ERA (2nd in MLB), 70 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.11. His consistency has been the backbone for a Mets rotation aiming for October.
Following the play, Mets teammates rallied around Alonso. Several players approached the veteran first baseman in the dugout, offering pats on the back and words of support. But while Alonso’s teammates stood by him, social media did not.
Social Media Blames Alonso on Senga Injury
Fans unleashed a wave of frustration and criticism directed squarely at Alonso.
One fan wrote, “That moron is going to get one of his pitchers killed. DH that guy!”
Another added, “Move him to DH. Enough of this sh*t.” The sentiment online was clear: while the team may forgive, many fans won’t forget.

There’s also growing concern that this incident might be the beginning of a downward slide for the Mets. One fan posted, “Not good. The Mets’ demise might be starting to show itself. That was an awful throw though. Hopefully [Senga] is OK.”
Others questioned Alonso’s fundamentals, suggesting he needs to “learn how to throw” all over again.

As of now, the Mets have yet to release a full update on Senga’s condition, though initial reports confirm a hamstring injury with further evaluation to come. Should Senga miss extended time, the Mets will have a major hole in their squad.
For Alonso, the moment will likely linger far beyond tonight’s game. Whether fans eventually soften or not, one thing is certain: in a season filled with promise, the Mets now face their biggest test yet.
