One of the biggest series in baseball every year is when the New York Mets face the New York Yankees in the Subway Series. The Mets and the Yankees will begin a three-game series against each other at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx starting on Friday night.
One of the biggest stories entering this series will be Mets outfielder Juan Soto returning to the Bronx for the first time since leaving the Yankees in free agency and signing a 15-year $765 million deal. It is quite possible that Yankees fans will be booing Soto every time he is at the plate. On the other side, the Yankees have the best player in the game in outfielder Aaron Judge.
MLB Analyst Says Mets Have Edge Over Yankees Entering Subway Series
Entering Wednesday, the Mets have a 28-15 record and sit in first place in the National League East. As for the Yankees, they have a 24-18 record and are in first place in the American League East. Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of The New York Post previewed the upcoming Subway Series on their podcast, The Show.
Pitching matchups for the Subway Series:
Fri: Tylor Megill vs Carlos RodĂłn
Sat: Griffin Canning vs Clarke Schmidt
Sun: David Peterson vs Max Fried— Mike Mayer (@mikemayer22)
Sherman mentioned that Max Fried could be the leading candidate for the American League Cy Young and that Judge is the leading candidate for the American League MVP. Despite all of that, Heyman thinks that the Mets have a better team than the Yankees
“The Yankees have some obvious weaknesses,” Heyman said. “But the Mets look strong both ways. They’re top five in hitting, and they’re certainly top five in pitching.”
Heyman noted the terrific performances from various starting pitchers this season that have led the Mets to such a great start. Griffin Canning looks like a Cy Young contender and is showing why he was once a first-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels. Tylor Megill has struggled in recent outings, but finally put all his talent together and dominated hitters to start the season.
Four #Mets starters have excelled this season — all rank among the 15 best ERAs by a Met (2020–2025) in their first 8 starts in a season. Leading the four: Kodai Senga. #LGM #MLB @Stathead pic.twitter.com/HhYKipUlPi

Plus, Kodai Senga leads the National League in ERA, and hitters once again are not having any success off his ghost forkball pitch.
On top of great pitching, the Mets have gotten great output from star hitters like Soto, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Lindor. The lineup looks even deeper now that young sluggers Mark Vientos and Brett Baty have overcome their early-season struggles.
No hitter on the Mets is on Judge’s level, but the Mets’ lineup is deeper. Plus, the Mets showed last year that they can beat the rival Yankees, winning all six of their games against the cross-town rivals.
No matter how you look at it, this weekend’s series between the Mets and the Yankees will be fun to watch.
