The Seattle Mariners are regarded as genuine postseason contenders once again this year. They had narrowly missed out on a playoff berth the previous two seasons despite finishing with winning records.

Bryan Woo Reacts to Mariners’ Slump After Getting Swept by D-backs
On Monday, the Mariners lost 5-2 to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field to get swept in the three-game road series. The defeat continues the sharp decline the team has undergone over the past couple of weeks.
Jorge Polanco had put the team into an early lead in the first inning with an RBI single to bring Randy Arozarena home to score the first run. Donovan Solano then doubled their advantage with a solo home run in the fifth.
Bryan Woo, however, suffered a late meltdown on the mound in the sixth inning despite being in full control of the game until then. However, one poor inning from the Mariners’ starting pitcher swung the game in the D-backs’ favor within a few minutes.
Woo posted five scoreless frames before he loaded up the bases in the sixth inning. He then gave up a grand slam to former Mariners third baseman Eugenio Suarez before Pavin Smith hit a solo home run to place the D-backs into a three-run lead.
Those were the only runs the home team scored in the entire game. However, the visitors’ batting lineup failed to respond and add any more runs to their total as well, which left them staring at yet another defeat.
After the game, Woo offered a five-word response to summarize his outing against the Diamondbacks. His words also encapsulated how the Mariners’ season has started to crumble over the past few weeks.
“Baseball kicks your ass sometimes,” he said, as per MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

After making an indifferent start to the 2025 campaign in the opening two weeks, the Mariners had rapidly gathered steam. They already had one of the strongest pitching staffs in the MLB, while their batting lineup also went on a hot run.
The Mariners eventually posted a .640 winning percentage in April to end the month at the top of the American League West. The team seemed to be in full command of their division after going eight games above .500 on May 23; however, their campaign has been on a steep downward slope ever since, besides losing pole position in the AL West.
The team has a 6-15 record over 21 matches, including their current run of eight defeats in the past nine games. At the same time, Woo has also had a sharp decline in his performance. He held a 2.84 ERA over his first eight appearances, allowing just four home runs. His ERA ballooned to 4.26 over the last five starts, while he has conceded seven homers during this stretch.
Following the loss on Wednesday, they are now tied with the Los Angeles Angels for second place in the AL West with a 33-34 record. Both teams presently trail the Houston Astros by four wins, while they are 2.5 games behind the final wild card berth.
