Isaac Paredes’ Injury Sparks Panic Among Astros Fans Amid Team’s History of Downplaying Serious Issues

Chandler Rome took to social media as Houston Astros fans reacted accordingly to Isaac Paredes’ injury. Currently in first place in the AL West, the Astros are on a two-game winning streak, rebounding after they dropped two games in a row for the first time since May 20-21. Houston has won seven of its last 10 but could enter a tough stretch of games without their home run and RBI leader.

Isaac Paredes Injury Leaves Fans With More Questions Than Answers

The Astros have a history of downplaying severe injuries, including one to Yordan Álvarez, who is still on the IL. Álvarez hasn’t played since May 2, even though he was eligible to come off the IL as soon as May 13. Houston’s fans are no strangers to the team not providing a clear injury update.

When Paredes went down, fans had reason to be concerned.

Rome posted, “Isaac Paredes has a left hamstring ailment” which had Astros fans in an uproar. They were confused by the term, ailment, so Rome clarified, “Ailment was my word, not theirs. Espada only called it ‘left hamstring.'”

One fan responded, “Ailment is the new discomfort” as someone sarcastically added, “Oh great he’s out for 2 months then in Astros terms.”

Another fan chimed in, writing, “So broken collar bone, got it.” The Astros have made themselves a laughing stock in terms of providing injury updates.

“He also said the strength was there and that Paredes told him he’s playing tomorrow,” one supporter said. It wouldn’t make sense for the Astros to risk rushing him back this early in the season, knowing how much they held back Álvarez by not shutting him down sooner.

Two more fans jumped on the sarcastic bandwagon, with one saying, “I don’t trust what any of them have to say about an injury. He might as well have hip surgery” with the other adding, “Guess he’ll be out until August then.”

The Astros will certainly miss Paredes’ power, as he’s their only player with double-digit home runs. While he has almost 20 fewer hits than Jeremy Pena, he has six more home runs and nine more RBIs than the players behind him. Both Pena and Christian Walker have nine homers and 33 runs driven in.

Pena’s extra hits have helped his OPS, as Pena’s .867 mark trumps Paredes’ .831. They are the only two players on the team with an OPS above .800, and each of them has a slugging percentage that approaching .500.

With a 4.5-game lead on both the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels, manager Joe Espada is hopeful that Paredes won’t miss an extended amount of time. His fans are far less optimistic.
