Insider Rings Alarm Bells for Phillies Ahead of Crucial MLB Trade Deadline

The previously red-hot Philadelphia Phillies have hit a gigantic wall to start the month of June.

Going into MLB play on Wednesday, the Phillies are 2-7 in June. That includes an ugly five-game losing streak against the Toronto Blue Jays and the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates.

Sure, Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper is injured, but the rest of the lineup has been a bit off. In the final two games against Pittsburgh, the Phillies scored a combined two runs.

There seems to be a lot to fix with this team, and fans are panicking. The front office appears a bit calmer, but surely feels urgency to fix the club ahead of July’s trade deadline.

MLB Insider Drops Concerning Phillies Take Amid Struggles

ESPN’s Brad Doolittle wrote about one thing that the Phillies need to do before the trade deadline.

His answer? Worry.

“Worry. The Phillies’ league-average offense has been carried by Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Bryce Harper, even as Harper has struggled through wrist issues that have him back on the IL,” Doolittle wrote.

“The position group once again rates as one of baseball’s poorest defenses, so those guys — not just the star trio noted above — need to hit. If the offense can produce consistently — and soon, given the competitive environment in the NL —Dave Dombrowski can focus his trade resources on upgrading the Phillies’ leaky bullpen.”

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently discussed the Phillies and said they could be aggressive at the deadline.

But Doolittle is right. There should be some concern for the Phillies.

The offense has cooled off considerably, the defense is not a strong suit, and the pitching needs some help across the board.

After getting swept by Pittsburgh, Phillies manager Rob Thomson even hinted at some changes, although he didn’t indicate what changes would be made to turn things around.

“We’ll see, you know?” Thomson said. “I’ve been thinking about some different things. We’ll see what happens.”

Fans and evaluators might have seen some of those moves this week. Thompson moved Bryson Stott out of the leadoff spot against right-handers during a matchup against the Chicago Cubs. Stott moved to fifth, with Trea Turner taking his place at the top of the order. Plus, Kyle Schwarber moved to second.

The Phillies were in first place in the National League East Division not too long ago, and a dead offense has contributed to them currently being in second. That said, Philadelphia scored four runs on Monday and Tuesday, but broke out with seven runs on Wednesday. If this outburst isn’t the new normal, there will be massive panic among Phillies fans.

For now, the Philadelphia front office will try and figure out what to do with the trade deadline coming up before panicking like fans.
