The Houston Astros have started the 2025 season 7-9, which has caused many fans to panic. Starting at 7-9 isn’t as bad as it appears. Historically, the Astros have been slow starters before turning things around and making a run for the playoffs.
While initial frustrations are unavoidable, the team’s history of resilience and grit offers hope that this slow beginning is just a page in a long season. With plenty of time to find their footing, the Astros’ depth and talent remain top contenders for rebounding.
Slow Starts but Strong Finishes for the Houston Astros
Over the last six seasons, the Houston Astros have become accustomed to slow starts. Still, their resilience and ability to bounce back have made them one of the most formidable teams in the American League.
The Astros have begun the season 7-9 in five of the last six seasons, including the 2025 season. Despite these slow starts, the team’s postseason runs have been consistently phenomenal, showing that slow starts are typically just a temporary stumbling block for this juggernaut.
In 2021, the Astros returned from their dismal start to make it to another World Series. Although they ultimately lost to the Atlanta Braves in six games, their perseverance was on full display.
The following year, in 2022, the Astros exacted their revenge. After clinching the first seed in the American League in the regular season, they ripped through the playoffs, ultimately defeating the Philadelphia Phillies in six games to claim their second World Series title in franchise history.
In 2023, the Astros failed to make a third straight World Series appearance, falling to the Texas Rangers in the ALCS. Despite that, their streak of postseason play continued to show the team was built for October baseball.
Despite another postseason berth in 2024, the Astros faced a fresh obstacle, playing in the Wild Card Round for the first time since 2020. However, the Detroit Tigers swept them. The playoff defeat was an odd disappointment for a club that had become accustomed to postseason success.
Although their slow starts are alarming, the Astros’ history demonstrates that they are a club capable of weathering the storm and powering through a slump to get the season back on track. With their quality core of veterans and breakout players, it would not be surprising to see them mount another postseason push despite their seemingly trademarked slow start.
