After Months of Suspense, Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton Finally Takes Major Step Toward on-Field Return

The New York Yankees might have the second-best winning percentage in the American League, but they’re still missing a few key pieces. With Giancarlo Stanton nearing a return, they could compete with the Detroit Tigers for the best record in all of baseball. Having just dropped a series to the Boston Red Sox, the team would love to see Stanton in the lineup in the next few days.

Giancarlo Stanton Will Begin His Rehab Assignment

There has been no timetable for how long Stanton will need in the minors, but Yankees fans can breathe once again as he is inching closer to his 2025 debut. After starting the season on the injured list due to injuries in both of his elbows, the righty is ready to make an impact on the Somerset Patriots (Double-A).

Bryan Hoch reported that Stanton’s minor league rehab assignment will begin on Tuesday, June 10. The Yankees enjoyed Monday, June 9, off as they enter a stretch of 16 straight games. From June 10-25, the team will play the Kansas City Royals, Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds. Three of the five series will be at home, with a seven-game homestand from June 16-22.

For Stanton, he is the next Yankee this season to spend some time with Somerset. He’s coming off a 2024 season where he hit .233, his best average since 2021. After hitting below .200 in 2023, his average was a step in the right direction as he looks to get back on track. Having been a Yankee since 2018, the former Miami Marlins player is looking to prove he deserves to be an everyday player in this Yankees lineup.

In the Yankees’ quest for a World Series title, Stanton hit .273 with a career-high 55 postseason at-bats. He had career postseason highs in both home runs (seven) and RBIs (16), as his OPS sat at 1.048. When the lights shined the brightest, Stanton was able to deliver as some of his other teammates struggled, to say the least.

One of the biggest question marks will be Stanton’s strikeout rate. Last year, he had a nearly career low of 31.2 K%, which put him in the bottom six percent of the league. His BB% has decreased as well, falling from 11.1% in 2022 to 8.3% last season.

Stanton saw a massive increase in his hard-hit rate, as the number went up from 48.4% to 55.3%. That percentage was good for the top 2% in all of baseball, as he landed in the top percent for both his exit velocity (94.6) and max EV (120.0).
