Emmet Sheehan Clears Locker As Dodgers Hint at Incoming Move

Emmet Sheehan is packing his stuff up to head back to the minors.

At least, that’s the rumor. Sheehan started Wednesday’s recent game against the San Diego Padres, which was also his first outing since undergoing Tommy John surgery in May of 2024. Sheehan allowed one earned run on three hits; he threw six strikeouts and issued no walks. But despite that, Oklahoma City Comets (AAA) Jack Little is with the big league team as of Thursday.

Who Is Jack Little?

Sometimes, a fresh arm in the bullpen is needed.

Little was actually with the Dodgers last weekend in part of the taxi squad, but was never officially called up.

With the Los Angeles Triple-A affiliate, the right-hander is 3-2 with a 2.20 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and 1.16 WHIP across 26 games this season. He also has 10 saves in 11 opportunities. Little was also with the team in big league camp, where he logged a 5.79 ERA over five Cactus League appearances.

Little was the Dodgers’ fifth-round pick in 2019 out of Stanford (categorized as a pure reliever). He missed the 2022 season after Tommy John surgery but has found his stride over the last two seasons, putting up a 3.22 ERA since the start of 2024 with 96 strikeouts and 30 walks in 89⅔ innings for Double-A Tulsa and Oklahoma City.

He most recently pitched on Tuesday, tossing two scoreless innings for the Comets.

To make room for Little on the 40-man roster, Tony Gonsolin was transferred to the 60-day injured list, meaning he cannot return until August 6. The right-hander was placed on the injured list due to right forearm discomfort in early June. Sheehan was officially optioned to Oklahoma City as a result as well.

“It was awesome,” Sheehan said of being back out on the mound. “Once I was out there, it was back to compete mode. Before and afterwards, you feel the emotions of the past year.”

According to Valentina Martinez with Dodgers Nation, this and the fact that the Dodgers only used two pitchers in their most recent game is even more proof that the reason Sheehan’s locker is empty is because he’s headed down.

Sheehan will need to spend at least 15 days in the minor leagues unless he’s recalled to replace a pitcher going on the injured list.
