Dodgers’ Unusual Tony Gonsolin Move Compared to $760,000 Rookie Hints at Serious Setback

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Tony Gonsolin on the 60-day injured list. This makes Gonsolin the third staple starter to be placed on the IL for a lengthy stint this season, joining Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, of whom the former is making positive strides toward a return to the roster soon.

The defending champions have struggled with injuries to their staple starters in the 2025 season. The ball club has consistently experimented with its starting rotation and is fighting to come out with important wins.

Dodgers’ Quick Decision on Tony Gonsolin Could Hint at Larger Issue

Dodgers beat writer Blake Harris shared his take on the ballclub’s decision to move Gonsolin to a 60-day IL with an elbow injury after less than two weeks since his last appearance on June 4. Meanwhile, they have refrained from placing Japanese rookie Roki Sasaki on a lengthy IL stint after he sustained an injury to his pitching shoulder during a May 9 start against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

With the current move, the defending champions now have seven starters on the IL out of 13 pitchers. Gonsolin’s move to the IL opened up a place for minor league pitcher Jack Little, who was subsequently called up to the 40-man roster from their Triple-A affiliate, the Oklahoma City Comets, during the home series against the San Diego Padres.

Little made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in the series finale against the Padres on Thursday, June 19. Now, media sources close to the Dodgers report that the RHP is very close to starting a game this season. Little’s addition to the roster led to pitcher Emmet Sheehan being optioned back to the minors.

As well, former Athletics relief pitcher Will Klein was acquired by the Dodgers from the Seattle Mariners earlier this month.

Currently, the Dodgers are playing out a three-game series against the Washington Nationals at home in Dodger Stadium. He was recalled ahead of the Nationals series, and he made his Dodgers debut in Game 2 against the Nats on Saturday night.

The Dodgers entered the three-game series against the Nationals on Friday, June 20, after winning back-to-back-to-back regular-season series against the Padres and the San Francisco Giants. They are 1-1 in the current series against the Nats after the visitors took Game 2 (7-3) on June 21, Klein’s debut in Dodger Blue.

The defending champions will look to showcase determined resolve and attempt to bounce back from this loss by winning the series finale on Sunday, June 22, extending their series-winning streak to four.
