The 2025 MLB season is nearly two months in, and things are starting to take shape. As of May 20, the Detroit Tigers are the only team with 30 or more wins. The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and Philadelphia Phillies all had 29 wins entering May 20, and the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants are a couple of wins away from the 30-victory threshold.
So, it’s a crowded group of teams contending for the top spot early on. On May 19, MLB Network revealed its updated power rankings, and fans were stunned that the Tigers did not have the top spot.
Fans Left Confused by Latest MLB Network Power Rankings
Here are the top 10 teams in the rankings from MLB Network as of May 19.
- Los Angeles Dodgers
- Detroit Tigers
- New York Mets
- San Diego Padres
- New York Yankees
- Philadelphia Phillies
- Chicago Cubs
- San Francisco Giants
- Minnesota Twins
- Seattle Mariners
Despite having the best record in baseball, the Tigers were behind the Dodgers, and fans on X were left confused.
“Tigers not #1 is crazzzyyy,” one fan wrote.
“Leading the MLB in wins and yet still can’t get the #1 spot,” an MLB fan wrote.
“Not having the Tigers at 1 is absolutely insane,” another fan said.
“Engagement farming here.. Some of the worst power rankings I’ve seen yet lol,” another fan wrote.
“Tigers not at #1 is just bait at this point #grit,” an X user wrote.
To make things even more confusing, the Los Angeles Angels just swept the Dodgers in a three-game home series before these power rankings were released, and the Angels are last in the American League West. It’s quite a surprise not to see the Tigers on top, despite the fact that the Dodgers are fresh off a World Series victory.
Detroit Tigers Have Exceeded Expectations So Far
The Tigers were a fringe playoff team entering the year. Before the season, they were at No. 12 in Pro Football Network’s MLB power rankings.
Here’s what Justin Lewis wrote back in March:
“Perhaps the surprise team of 2024, the Detroit Tigers, are poised to stick around. Tarik Skubal is for real, and Jack Flaherty found himself after escaping the dumpster fire in St. Louis. The Tigers will need improved efforts out of top young players like Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson, but Gleyber Torres is poised for a turnaround after leaving the bright lights of New York.”
So, while the MLB Network isn’t giving the Tigers the top spot yet, Detroit has still enjoyed a stellar start to the year and is potentially on its way to making a deep playoff run.
