Dodgers Injury Update: Tommy Edman, Teoscar Hernández Nearing Return while Evan Phillips Faces Unexpected Delay

The Los Angeles Dodgers have the best record in the National League right now despite having a long list of players currently unavailable due to injury. They lost utility man Tommy Edman at the start of the month before outfielder Teoscar Hernandez and relief pitcher Evan Phillips joined him on the IL.

The Dodgers had moved Edman to the 10-day IL after he suffered an ankle injury on April 29th. Hernandez also joined him on the 10-day IL on May 6 with a groin issue, with MRI scans later showing a Grade 1 adductor strain. Phillips was placed on the 15-day IL the following day due to right forearm discomfort.

At the moment, the reigning World Series champions are in a four-game road series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. They lost the opening encounter to the D-backs at Chase Field on Friday night. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared some updates regarding the injured players ahead of the second game of the series on Saturday.

As per Jack Harris, the Dodgers beat writer for The Los Angeles Times, both Edman and Hernandez are making progress with their recovery, but it may be a while before they are able to take the field. At the same time, Phillips will probably have to spend a longer period on the sidelines than was initially expected.

“Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernández will take live BPs early in next week’s homestand. Edman’s ankle is at about 80% right now. Hernández has started swinging in the cage again,” he posted on X.

“Evan Phillips’ timeline is going to be longer than initially thought. He got an MRI that showed no “incidents” in his elbow, per Roberts. But he won’t start a throwing program for another two weeks,” he added.

Kristen Watson, the on-field reporter for SportsNet LA, the Dodgers’ home broadcast network, confirmed the news concerning the 30-year-old right-handed reliever.

“Evan Phillips was placed on the IL with forearm discomfort, but Dave Roberts today shared that an MRI revealed elbow inflammation. Dave Roberts added, Phillips won’t pick up a ball for at least two weeks,” she tweeted before the game on Friday.

Incidentally, Phillips had been activated from the IL on April 19th after missing the first 21 games of the season with a right rotator cuff strain. He has six appearances so far this year with one save to his name, and he is yet to give up a run through 5.2 innings, while recording six strikeouts and two walks.

Meanwhile, Edman had turned out to be one of the best hitters in the Dodgers lineup over the first month of the season with eight home runs, 24 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 129. At the same time, Teoscar Hernandez was batting .315/.333/.600 for the season with nine homers, an MLB-leading 34 RBIs, and a 161 OPS+ when he got moved to the IL.
