Desperate Red Sox Try To Save Dwindling Playoff Odds by Promoting 26-Year-Old Pitcher With 0.48 ERA

The Boston Red Sox have jumped out to a disappointing start in the 2025 season. As of May 30, the Red Sox are four games under .500 and in fourth place in the American League East.

It has been a frustrating stretch as they have lost five in a row going into the final series of May against the Atlanta Braves.

Though they can place some of the blame on injuries, the bottom line is that the Red Sox are not meeting expectations. They made a move on May 30, hoping to add some energy to the locker room.

Red Sox Call Up Promising 26-Year-Old

The Red Sox recently called up Marcelo Mayer, the No. 2 prospect in the system, after Alex Bregman landed on the injured list.

Now, the Red Sox are dipping into the farm system again and calling up pitcher Nick Burdi, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.

“The Red Sox are calling up Nick Burdi to join the team in Atlanta tonight, multiple sources confirm. There’s a corresponding move to be made — and likely an IL stint for an unidentified pitcher.”

The corresponding move was Liam Hendriks going on the IL due to right hip inflammation.

Burdi was promoted to the big league club earlier in May before being sent back down, and now he returns. Burdi made just two appearances, but he threw two shutout innings against the Atlanta Braves on May 17 after giving up four runs with one walk and one strikeout the day before.

Now, he comes back as the Red Sox face the Braves again.

Who Is Nick Burdi?

Burdi was drafted twice by the Minnesota Twins. The first time was in the 24th round of the 2011 MLB Draft, and then in the second round of the 2014 MLB Draft, following his college baseball career at Louisville.

He has bounced around quite a bit, including stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees before coming to Boston.

He was thriving at Triple-A Worcester. In 15 appearances, he had a 0.48 ERA in 18.2 innings while giving up just one run and five walks all season long.

Burdi is yet another Red Sox minor leaguer who is making his way to MLB, as Alex Cora has been figuring out how to win games while getting the younger guys some work.

Now, Burdi comes back to the big leagues for the second time in May in what should be a promising addition to the bullpen.
