Dave Roberts Reveals Blake Snell’s Injury Status Amid Dodgers’ Stumbling Pitching Rotation

The Los Angeles Dodgers had made Blake Snell their first big addition of the offseason after signing him to a five-year, $182 million contract last November. However, the two-time Cy Young Award winner has failed to make a mark for his new team, having spent the past month on the IL.

Dodgers Manager Shares Injury Update on Blake Snell

Snell made his season debut as their Opening Day starter on March 27 against the Detroit Tigers. He pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs with two strikeouts to pick up his first win for the Dodgers.

However, he lasted just four innings in his next start against the Atlanta Braves before he was taken off the mound due to shoulder inflammation. The Dodgers have shut him down indefinitely, even though MRI scans found no structural damage.

MLB insider Bill Plunkett, the beat writer covering the Dodgers for the Orange County Register, shared an update regarding the current situation of the southpaw pitcher from Dodgers manager Dave Roberts via X on Friday.

“Blake Snell is now scheduled to play catch on Sunday. ‘I think being sick set him back a couple of days,’ per Dave Roberts.”

Meanwhile, Snell had failed to join up with the team last week during their road series against the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old was scheduled to start a throwing program to continue his rehab process, but was unable to take part in it.

The Dodgers had initially expected Snell to be back on the mound by the middle of May. However, his return was delayed further after he experienced shoulder discomfort while playing catch to start his first bullpen session by the end of April.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently included the Dodgers’ left-hander among the biggest disappointments of the season thus far. He was added among the big offseason free agent signings that have not yet performed to the level of their massive contracts.

“The Dodgers committed $182 million over five years to get Blake Snell, who, after two starts, went on the injured list with shoulder inflammation,” Bowden wrote in his column earlier this week.

The former Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres superstar won the Cy Young Award with both teams. Yet, he had remained an unsigned free agent until he signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants towards the end of the offseason.

After making a late start to the 2024 campaign, Snell also had a couple of stints on the IL before pitching his first no-hitter against the Cincinnati Reds last August. He opted out of his deal with the Giants in the offseason before moving over to the Dodgers.

So far, Snell has only pitched nine innings over two starts for his new team. He has a 2.00 ERA with four strikeouts and eight walks. However, his expected ERA is 7.80, even though the sample size is extremely small.

    1. Blake Snell will recover and will do great things for the Dodgers! But the big story is the pathetic performance of Max Muncy, Conforto, Taylor, and Kiki! The biggest failure of all of those is Muncy who should be traded away, and the Dodgers should go after Arenado
