‘He’s Just Frustrated’ — Dave Roberts Clarifies Dodgers’ Stance on Tyler Glasnow’s Rehab Amid Mixed Signals

In life, there’s a saying: “The sooner, the better.”

That mindset applies just as well in sports — especially for Major League Baseball pitchers dealing with injuries. Tyler Glasnow is one of those pitchers, and the Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander seems eager to get back on the mound.

Glasnow lasted just 18 innings over five starts this season before right shoulder inflammation landed him on the injured list in late April. It’s a frustrating halt after a solid first season with the Dodgers, during which the Santa Clarita, Calif., native posted a 3.49 ERA over a career-high 134 innings.

A Battle To Get Back on the Mound

Earlier this week, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts offered a less-than-encouraging update on Glasnow’s recovery — even as the pitcher pushes to return.

“We’re on pause right now. Or not pause; he’s playing catch,” Roberts said, per Sam Garcia of Sports Illustrated. “I’m not sure when he’s going to get back on a mound. Our hope is that it will be soon.”

“I say this speaking for him — I know he’s just frustrated, as we all are. The process since we’ve had him hasn’t been linear. He wants to get back and help,” Roberts continued. “He threw his one ‘pen, and then his body didn’t respond. So we’re trying to figure out when we can ramp him back up. He’s chomping at the bit, so that’s a good thing. I know he’s very anxious to get back out here and help his team.”

While Roberts painted a cautious picture of Glasnow’s status, the pitcher himself sounded far more optimistic when speaking to reporters a day later.

“My shoulder is totally fine. That issue I haven’t felt since I’ve been throwing,” Glasnow told reporters. “Literally just a precaution, that’s all. Totally fine, I’m good to go.”

He added, “Yeah, it was last week, but I’ve been feeling good. I’m throwing and pitched a bullpen — and really good.”

Glasnow is currently on a five-year, $136.5 million deal and was officially placed on the 60-day injured list, retroactive to April 28. With the clock ticking toward a possible return, the 30-year-old seems motivated to come back ahead of schedule — or at the very least, as soon as possible.

Whether he and the Dodgers are on the same page remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Tyler Glasnow is eager to pitch again.
