D-Backs Injury Update: Corbin Carroll’s Season in Doubt After Left Wrist Fracture Diagnosis

Just days after learning catcher Gabriel Moreno’s hand contusion was a hairline fracture, the Arizona Diamondbacks received more bad news. Star outfielder Corbin Carroll has reportedly a chip fracture in his left wrist. The injury was sustained when Carroll was hit by a pitch on June 18 in Toronto, which sidelined the 2023 NL Rookie of the Year.

Injury May Sideline Arizona D-backs Star Corbin Carroll For the Season

At just 24 years old, Carroll has been a cornerstone of the D-Backs’ lineup, slashing .255/.341/.573 with 20 home runs, 10 stolen bases, and a league-leading nine triples. His stats and contributions proved to be indispensable for his team. Nevertheless, after a fastball struck his wrist, his road to glory may be halted for this season.

Negative results from X-rays made an MRI necessary, which revealed the chip fracture. “It’s just unfortunate,” Carroll said. The D-Backs now face a very apparent threat to their season dreams. Manager Torey Lovullo admitted the diagnosis remains “a little bit confusing,” pointing towards the fact that the fracture’s location is on the back of Carroll’s hand.

“He’s going to get more opinions to find out what the official diagnosis means and the time frame,” Lovullo said. Carroll, unfamiliar with bone injuries, added, “I know it hurts. I’m hoping for a shorter-term (IL stint). I’ve never experienced a bone break before; I’m still gathering information.”

In 2018, Yankees star Aaron Judge missed only two months with a similar wrist chip fracture, so many are optimistic that Carroll may not have to be benched for too long.

Bad News After Bad News For Arizona

Arizona’s injury woes are stacking up. The D-Backs have already lost ace Corbin Burnes and relievers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk to season-ending elbow surgeries, while Moreno nurses a fractured finger. With Carroll now the tenth player on the injured list, the team’s depth is stretched thin.

Recent concerns involving Eugenio Suárez and Josh Naylor only deepen the threat. However, Arizona still remains steadfast, riding a 10-0 rout of the Chicago White Sox on Monday and winning nine of their last 13 games. At 40-38, they sit 2 and a half games back of the third NL wild-card spot.

To fill Carroll’s void, the D-Backs recalled outfielder Jake McCarthy from Triple-A. McCarthy will be joining Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Alek Thomas, and Randal Grichuk in the outfield. While McCarthy has shown promise, replacing Carroll’s production is a tall order.
