Back in the 2015 MLB Draft, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected shortstop Dansby Swanson out of Vanderbilt at first overall. The D-Backs surprisingly traded Swanson before he even played a game for the big-league club later that year, shipping him to the Atlanta Braves for a package centered around Shelby Miller.
In a recent interview on Diggin’ Deep Shows, a popular baseball podcast hosted by former MLB players like Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas, Swanson opened up about how he felt after this trade, confessing that he hit rock bottom without ever telling his soccer-star wife, Mallory Swanson.
Dansby Swanson Confesses Hitting Rock Bottom Post-Trade
Swanson talked about how he was at his lowest point on Diggin’ Deep Shows following the trade to the Braves. He elaborated by saying that he wasn’t eating healthy while consuming too much alcohol, even keeping this a secret from his professional soccer player wife, Mallory Pugh Swanson.
This was an intriguing interview because it gives viewers a glimpse of what professional athletes go through. It’s not easy to give your 100 percent to an organization only to be abruptly traded, feeling like you’re not wanted. Picking up and changing locations on the fly can be challenging, especially for young players like Swanson at the time.
Having podcasts like Diggin’ Deep Shows is what’s great about the sporting world right now. Never before have fans had such in-depth access to their favorite players. It’s interesting to get their perspective on the inner workings of MLB and other professional sports leagues.
Swanson 2025 Season Outlook
Swanson is off to a slow start this season, putting up a .196 batting average with four home runs in 26 games. But let’s remember that this is a player who has put up 22+ homers in three of his last four years. During this stretch, Swanson has been worth 4.0+ Wins Above Replacement (WAR) in three of those seasons.

The Cubs look like World Series contenders this year, led by superstar Kyle Tucker along with emerging breakout Pete Crow-Armstrong. Swanson will have a chance to go on a World Series run in Chicago.
Expect the former Brave to put up his usual 20+ homers with 10-15 stolen bases while providing solid defense. With how Swanson has played so far, you can definitely say that he’s been worth the seven-year, $177 million deal that he signed back in 2023. Despite the slow start, Swanson has enough of a track record to trust that the production will be there going forward.
That trade went down years before ge met his wife. Fake news.
He is just a crybaby looking for attention…
He didn’t start dating Mallory until 2017, and they married in 2022. So when he was at his bottom after the trade in 2015, she wasn’t even in the picture.
He was probably more down about the fact that he couldn’t hit a breaking ball, and even though he was supposed to be a contender for a gold glove every year, they don’t just give those things out to guys who hit .230. So now 10 years in, he still only has one GG.
So glad the Braves aren’t on the hook for $177 million….we have enough expensive under achievers as it is!
