Clayton Kershaw to Pitch on Sunday vs. Cardinals as Dodgers Adjust Rotation

The Los Angeles Dodgers have 15 pitchers on the injured list, meaning yet another adjustment had to be made to their starting rotation. Clayton Kershaw’s next start has been moved up to Sunday, June 8, as Dustin May needs another day of rest. May will now start for the team on Monday, June 9.

Clayton Kershaw Looks to Pick Up First Win of the Year

Having pitched last Monday, June 2, May will have a full week of rest before he takes the mound again on June 9. His last start saw him give up two earned runs over six innings, though he allowed six hits to the dangerous New York Mets. The Mets took that game 4-3 in 10 innings, and May didn’t factor into the decision.

As for Kershaw, the Dodgers legend made his fourth start of the season on Tuesday, June 3. While he pitched more recently than May, he’ll take the mound June 8 on shorter rest. The 37-year-old has yet to record a decision in 2025, and his numbers haven’t impressed.

Kershaw gave up three earned runs—and five total—in the team’s recent 6-5 win over the Mets, also in 10 innings. The series was tightly contested between two of the top teams in the National League and could be a playoff preview.

So far, Kershaw has allowed nine earned runs in 15.2 innings pitched. He hasn’t gone longer than five innings this year; in fact, he’s only reached the five-inning mark once. His debut on May 17 lasted four innings, and he threw just 26 pitches over two innings in his second start less than a week later. Oddly enough, in two separate series, both his second and fourth starts came against the Mets.

With Kershaw’s 5.17 ERA, May’s 4.09 ERA and 3-4 record clearly stand out. May has been with the Dodgers since 2019, but this is shaping up to be his biggest season yet. Through the team’s 64 games, May has started 11. The 27-year-old hadn’t started more than 10 games in a season with the Dodgers before, with the highest total being 10 starts in the shortened 2020 campaign.

May’s 2025 run has been vital as the team’s injured list continues to be loaded with pitchers. Manager Dave Roberts has still led the Dodgers to a 38-26 record despite the setbacks. It’s a testament to the team’s depth and how determined Roberts is to lead them to back-to-back World Series titles.
