Boston Red Sox Mulling Key Roster Move Involving Emerging Talent Kristian Campbell

The Boston Red Sox are currently 33-36 for the season, acquiring the fourth spot in the AL East standings. They are three games below the .500 winning percentage mark and have been attempting to rejig their starting lineup ever since encountering multiple injuries to both positional players and pitchers in recent weeks.

The Red Sox placed their in-form OF, Wilyer Abreu, on the injured list after he suffered an oblique strain. As a result of this injury, they called up Roman Anthony from the minors to play in right field. While the 2018 world champions hope their star hitter rejoins the roster soon, they have been mulling over a possible roster shakeup once again.

Boston Red Sox Mull Over Sending Rookie Kristian Campbell Back To The Minor Leagues

According to MLB analyst and senior writer with the Boston Globe, Alex Speier, the Red Sox are mulling over the possibility of sending back rising star second baseman Kristian Campbell on assignment with their Triple-A affiliate, the Worcester Red Sox, once Abreu completes his recovery process and is ready to rejoin the roster this season. Boston Strong shared the official take of the senior analyst in a post on X.com.

The Red Sox selected Campbell’s contract ahead of the opening day of the 2025 MLB season after he produced decent performances in both departments of the game during spring training. The rookie signed an eight-year, $60 million contract with the ballclub on Apr 2, which included club options for the 2033 and 2034 seasons.

Right off the bat, Campbell showcased stellar defense at second base and compiled quality at-bats since making his big league debut. At just 22 years old, Campbell is showing great promise to become a future big league star, but with the Red Sox waiting on a couple of their stars to recover from their injuries, he could see his playing time cut short in the MLB.

Red Sox Have Struggled Since Encountering Multiple Injuries To Their Star Players In 2025

The Red Sox have been coping with multiple injuries to both their positional players and the pitchers. They had to rejig their pitching rotation after losing three key starting pitchers to various injuries alongside multiple injuries to their relief pitchers, which have heavily depleted the bullpen depth.

As for the positional players, the lengthy stints on the injury list started with 1B Triston Casas, who has now been ruled out for the entire season, Gold Glove 3B Alex Bregman, LF Masataka Yoshida, and now RF Abreu. With games coming thick and fast, every contest is of utmost importance for the struggling Red Sox as they hope to make it to the postseason in 2025.
