Holding a 28-40 record, the Baltimore Orioles are seven and a half games back in the American League Wild Card standings. Once they finish their homestand against the Los Angeles Angels, the team will head out for a crucial seven-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees, a series that could determine the team’s season direction.
Barring a huge winning streak, the Orioles are expected to be sellers at the trade deadline, and one MLB insider believes they could alter multiple playoff races if they choose to sell.

Jim Bowden Says Orioles’ Players Could Be in Demand at the Deadline
MLB Insider Jim Bowden discussed the latest trade deadline information that he’s heard and believes that the Orioles have a wealth of assets to offer at the trade deadline, including outfielder Cedric Mullins and starting pitcher Charlie Morton.
Bowden notes that the team will likely prioritize trading players who will be free agents at the end of the season, so they can receive something for them instead of watching them leave for nothing.
A 13th-round draft pick of the Orioles in 2015, Mullins developed into an All-Star and Silver Slugger Award winner. He’s currently hitting .230 with 10 home runs and a .766 OPS. He struggled in May after a hot start to the season, hitting .179 during the month with 27 strikeouts and only three walks.
Despite poor plate discipline in May, his current 11% walk rate is the highest of his career, which will attract potential suitors at the deadline. Mullins’ current hard hit and air rates are also career highs. His ability to hit the ball in the air consistently and with more force than normal suggests he may have another power surge this season at some point, which also likely interests potential suitors.

A former All-Star, Morton has an excellent track record, but he may be nearing the end of his career.
The 41-year-old pitcher currently has a 6.05 ERA and was sent to the bullpen following a disastrous start to the season. Interested teams have certainly noticed that Morton is pitching better since returning to the rotation, with a 2.57 ERA over his last three starts.

Morton still averages 94 miles per hour on his fastball, which is fine for a back-end of the rotation guy, which he is at this point.
His signature curveball hasn’t been great this year, with a minus-four run value. Attracted teams may believe Morton will continue to regain his command as the season continues.
He’s also been a solid postseason performer, having contributed to two World Series teams. However, it’s hard to imagine any contender wanting Morton to pitch meaningful innings for them this October.
The Orioles will have the opportunity to make minor subtractions at the deadline this year while counting on their young stars to bounce back next year.
