Austin Wells Gets Honest About Yankees’ Offensive Struggles Amid Team’s Losing Skid

The New York Yankees are going through a season-high five game losing streak and have watched their American League East Division lead shrink to just 2 1/2 games over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Offense has been the team’s biggest problem. The Yankees have been held scoreless over their last 29 innings. Catcher Austin Wells offered some insights into the team’s mindset during this time.

Austin Wells Says Yankees Aren’t Worried

Wells spoke to the media about the Yankees’ current offensive struggles and believes that it’s just a natural part of the season. “I don’t think there’s any reason to change up what we were doing before,” he said.

Wells is currently hitting .217 but has 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. He’s among the top five MLB offensive catchers this season.

The Yankees are in the longest scoring drought in nearly a decade. Slight criticism has been directed toward team captain Aaron Judge. Judge has gone 1-for-11 recently, seeing his batting average drop from .394 to .372 over the past week. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says Judge has chased a couple of bad pitches recently, but he’s not worried about Judge.

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt’s average has dropped from .311 to .304 and outfielder Cody Bellinger has gone 2-for-12. While Bellinger has seven home runs at Yankee Stadium this season, he hasn’t quite provided the production that the Yankees were expecting when they traded for him last off-season.

The Yankees’ current struggles have stirred up talk getting additional offensive punch at the MLB trade deadline.

There have been some positives, though, in this stretch. After missing a month with an oblique strain, third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr is hitting .333 with a .964 OPS. Chisholm is streaky hitter. If he can maintain above-average production this summer, then the Yankees could build a huge lead in the AL East standings.

Designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton is back after being sidelined with severe elbow pain. Stanton returned to action this past Monday against the Los Angeles Angels and has four hits in his first eight at-bats.

While the Yankees’ current offensive struggles are a sign of the natural ups and downs during a baseball season, their talented lineup looks ready to turn things around soon.
