GM Ross Atkins Drops 4-Word Bombshell on Bo Bichette’s Contract Talks with Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays have successfully locked down Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the long term, securing the star first baseman with a massive 14-year, $500 million deal. This is a significant win for the team, especially after falling short in their attempts to land Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto.

The Blue Jays had been working for some time to extend Guerrero Jr.’s contract, but negotiations had stalled over finding a mutually agreeable figure. After the Juan Soto deal, Guerrero Jr. was understandably aiming for a substantial payday. In the end, both the player and the team reached a deal that satisfied both parties.

However, building a championship-caliber team remains an ongoing challenge. Now, the Blue Jays face a crucial decision regarding Bo Bichette, the star shortstop who will soon become a free agent.

Ross Atkins Reveals Intentions for Their Shortstop

In a video uploaded by Sportsnet 590 The FAN, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins is asked about the team’s next steps towards a potential Bo Bichette extension. To which Atkins said, “Most importantly, similar to Vlad, the interest is there.”

In 2021 and 2022, the 27-year-old Bo Bichette led the American League in hits and earned two All-Star selections. However, his 2024 season was a disappointment, as he hit just .225 with four home runs and struggled with injuries, appearing in only 81 games.

The Blue Jays could potentially sign Bichette at a bargain price now, but they risk that his poor performance in 2024 may signal a decline in his overall play.

Despite rumors that Bichette may not want to remain in Toronto, GM Ross Atkins’ vocal support of the ongoing contract negotiations remains promising for a potential extension. However, Bichette has yet to show consistent value to justify the kind of deal he’s seeking.

Bichette could still earn a solid extension if he stays healthy, improves his defense, and rebounds offensively this season. A seven- to ten-year deal worth $25 to $35 million per year would be a reasonable ask for the Blue Jays’ shortstop.

A long-term contract would allow the Blue Jays to keep Bichette during the prime of his career, as he’s only 27. Toronto has a strong tradition of valuing homegrown talent, and Bichette is a key part of that pool.

With a strong comeback this season, Bo Bichette could prove his true worth and secure a deal that reflects his potential.
