Astros Rookie Cam Smith Earns Spot in Historic Franchise List Featuring Carlos Correa After Dominant Outing

Teams that aren’t Houston have a problem, and that problem is Cam Smith. The 22-year-old rookie hadn’t hit a single home run since mid-to-late April. This was not the case on Tuesday night.

While the NHL world was tuned into the Florida Panthers winning the Stanley Cup, the MLB world watched Smith homer in his first two at-bats, post an outfield single, and then rope in an RBI double for a career-best four-hit showing.

If that wasn’t impressive enough, doing all this at only 22 years old put him in the Houston Astros’ record books.

Four-Hit Record: Cam Smith Swings for the Record Book Fences

Following the 13-3 win over the Athletics, Smith said it’s important to show how grateful he is for doing what he loves every time he steps up to the plate. “It’s a crazy game we play,” Smith said to MLB.com. “Just to get a new opportunity every day, you’ve got to say thank you because you can do something cool every day.”

As for the record he set, Smith is now the fourth-youngest player in Astros history to have hit a four-hit ballgame with two home runs. The only three younger than Smith (22 years, 115 days) were Carlos Correa, Joe Morgan, and Rusty Staub.

Notably, Smith led off the second inning with a 415-foot blast to left-center to make it 3-0. He also opened the fourth with an even longer shot to left-center, this one traveling 431 feet. He did all this from the No. 7 spot in the lineup.

Smith wasn’t alone in his success against the A’s. Mauricio Dubon, Christian Walker, and Cooper Hummel also went deep, as Houston racked up 15 hits while winning for the sixth time in seven games. Dubon finished 3-for-3 with two walks.

A’s starter JP Sears (5-6) allowed five runs and five hits over 3 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out none.

Astros manager Joe Espada said Smith’s hitting mechanics played a big role in his success on Tuesday night. “We know he can drive the ball to right-center field, but it’s about being down on time and trying to catch the ball out in front a little more, trying to drive the ball to left center, and he did that today,” Espada said.

The Astros are currently in first place in the American League West with a 42-31 record.
