Alex Bregman’s Surreal Act Wins Red Sox’s Top Prospect’s Heart Amid Alex Cora’s Huge Hitting Lineup Update

When Alex Bregman joined the Boston Red Sox for camp this spring, it marked the tenth time he has broken camp with an MLB club. However, this was the first time he did so as a member of a team other than the Houston Astros. How was he received?

    Bonding With the Team’s Youth

Bregman was originally drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in 2012 as a 29th-round pick but chose to attend Louisiana State University instead. That decision paid off, as he became a first-round pick for the Astros in 2015 and quickly emerged as a top prospect. Following the draft, he was ranked No. 15 among all prospects.

By the start of the 2016 season, he was ranked the No. 1 prospect in MLB and has been a major league regular ever since.

Now, with a three-year, $120 million contract in hand, Bregman is expected to serve as both a key player and a mentor to the Red Sox’s promising young prospects. Boston has four players ranked in MLB’s Top 100 list: Roman Anthony (No. 2), Kristian Campbell (No. 7), Marcelo Mayer (No. 12), and Franklin Arias (No. 75).

One of those prospects, outfielder Roman Anthony, has already built a strong relationship with Bregman.

Anthony says, “It’s awesome when a guy like Alex Bregman comes up to me and is picking my brain and asking me questions… He wants to win, he’s a competitor. We have so many similarities.”

    Shipping Up to Boston

While Anthony and the other prospects may still be some time away from Fenway Park, having a veteran like Bregman who understands the pressures of being a top prospect is essential for their development.

Bregman brings a winning pedigree and a track record of personal success to his new team. He is a two-time World Series champion, a two-time All-Star, and was named the 2018 All-Star Game MVP.

Early signs indicate he is fitting in well with the Red Sox. This spring, Bregman has hit .375 (9-for-24) with two home runs, eight RBIs, and a 1.277 OPS. More importantly, he is making an impact as a leader.

Bregman recently bought suits for many of Boston’s top prospects, following in the footsteps of former Astros veterans Carlos Beltrán, Brian McCann, and Josh Reddick, who did the same for him early in his career.

Mayer called it “the sickest thing ever,” adding, “It was my first suit… It was truly incredible and something I will never forget.”

Bregman’s leadership and experience appear to be making an immediate impact in Boston. If his production matches his mentorship, the Red Sox may have made one of the most valuable signings of the offseason.
