Alex Bregman Pushing Limits in Recovery, Hopeful for Pre-All-Star Comeback

Alex Begman came into the Boston Red Sox lineup as their top free agent signing of the offseason. The two-time World Series champion has certainly lived up to the billing by making an excellent start to the season with his new team.

However, Bregman was struck down by a right quad strain last month while running on the basepaths. He was subsequently placed on the IL and has not yet made his return to the team.

Alex Bregman Affirms Making a Speedy Recovery From Injury

On Friday afternoon, Bregman shared positive updates on his condition in the Red Sox clubhouse after undergoing his latest ultrasound scans. He believes the injury is healing quite swiftly, and he could return to the team earlier than anticipated.

“We had a little ultrasound that showed that it was doing really well in healing, healing the way we wanted it to,” Bregman said. “So, just continuing the progression and getting it stronger, and picking up the running volume, and it’s moving in the right direction.”

“The biggest thing for this is just building running volume and running capacity to where I can be able to withstand going 4-for-4 with two doubles off the wall that I have to get to second on. Once I build up to that running volume and that capacity, I’ll be ready to go.”

Bregman took the blow in the first game of a doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles on May 23rd. The 31-year-old had damaged himself while rounding off the first bag to get a hustled double on a line drive to the right field wall at Fenway Park.

The two-time All-Star feared that he might be sidelined for a lengthy period, having had a similar injury in 2021 during his time with the Houston Astros. Those fears, seemingly, have evaporated, as he now hopes to rejoin the team before the All-Star break.

“I don’t know, maybe some good luck,” Bregman said on why the recovery seems to be moving faster this time. “Overall, this one’s been healing much faster, which is maybe not what I would have predicted from the beginning, but it has been. Just super thankful.”

Having started his running progression last week, Bregman revealed that he is up to 50% now, while he has been throwing and working on strengthening his leg. He arrives at the ballclub at around 11 a.m. and works out until the end of the day.

“We’re basically rehabbing for 12 hours a day,” he said. “I’m trying to get back on the field as fast as possible to help this team win baseball games.”

Meanwhile, the Red Sox have struggled on the field in the absence of Bregman. They had a 27-26 record at the time of his injury. Since then, they have been 8-10, and that too after some strong performances over the past week.

“It’s definitely tough. You never want to be hurt. But there’s only one thing to do, and that’s to just put all your focus into the rehab and getting back as fast as you possibly can and as healthy as you possibly can so you can maintain that the rest of the way.”

Bregman had joined the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million deal, with opt-outs at the end of each season. He has posted a .299/.385/.553 slash line over 51 games thus far, with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs, and an OPS+ of 159.
