MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Jalen Ramsey injury was the supernova of Day 2 of Miami Dolphins training camp. Every other story paled in comparison.
But there was lots of other news and notes from Thursday, beginning with a fantastic day from Vic Fangio’s defense. We go through it all in our Miami Dolphins training camp practice report.
Latest News From Miami Dolphins Training Camp
Defensive Dominance
The Dolphins’ defense had one bad play on Thursday: Braxton Berrios roasted Cam Smith for a 68-yard touchdown from Skylar Thompson late in team drills.
Other than that, it was a one-sided day.
Kader Kohou undercut a pass across the middle to intercept Tua Tagovailoa in 7-on-7 drills, and the Dolphins would have had a couple of other picks if their defenders could hang onto the ball.
Kohou was already expected to be a big part of the Dolphins’ defense even before Ramsey’s injury. If the league’s CB1 misses significant time, Kohou’s role will be huge in 2023.
(Before the injury, Ramsey had blanket coverage on a deep ball to Jaylen Waddle from Tagovailoa, who was lucky to have the pass fall incomplete).
But the real stars of the day were Miami’s trench players. The Dolphins had at least two sacks — including one by Christian Wilkins — and too many pressures to count in 11-on-11 drills.
Raekwon Davis continued his fast start to camp with a big-time run stop late in the session.
As for Mitchell Agude, the star of OTAs? He had a sack and stuffed a run at the line of scrimmage in the span of three plays.
Jaelan Phillips Hurt?
A day after appearing to tweak his left foot/ankle, third-year EDGE Jaelan Phillips was a non-participant in practice.
Phillips was spotted with the team before practice but not in uniform.
He was one of five Dolphins players who sat out Thursday’s session after practicing the day before. The others: CB Trill Williams, CB Keion Crossen, S Brandon Jones, and WR Freddie Swain.
Williams and Jones are coming off torn ACLs but avoided the PUP list by passing pre-camp physicals.
Misc.
- Thompson overcame a near pick in 7-on-7s to have the best day of any Dolphins quarterback Thursday. He completed 5 of 7 passes for 119 yards and the perfectly thrown touchdown in team drills. (All stats are approximate and very unofficial.)
Thompson has outplayed Mike White dating back to spring ball in the practices open to reporters. On Thursday, White completed 4 of 5 attempts for 32 yards in 11-on-11s. Tagovailoa had a quiet day, completing 4 of 7 passes for 41 yards in team drills.
- Cornerback Nik Needham is still just nine months removed from a torn Achilles, and he looks it. Needham went through light rehab running and agility drills on the sidelines early in practice and didn’t look fluid.
No matter Ramsey’s injury status, it’s hard to see him being ready for the start of the regular season.
