Miami Dolphins Practice Report and Injury Update: Jalen Ramsey Intrigue Grows

Three days to go until the Miami Dolphins season opens, and there are nothing but questions about Jalen Ramsey, who still isn't practicing.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Thursday was the most important day of the Miami Dolphins‘ practice week, but Jalen Ramsey was still MIA in MIA.

Ramsey again was not spotted during the portion of practice open to reporters, upping the odds that the star cornerback will not be available for the Dolphins’ Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Ramsey has not done any on-field work in 16 days, and it’s been the better part of a month since he’s gone through a full practice.

If Ramsey cannot play Sunday, the Dolphins will use some combination of Ethan Bonner and Storm Duck as the team’s boundary corners against Trevor Lawrence. They combined have 11 NFL regular-season snaps on defense.

Asked before practice Thursday if he thinks he’ll have Ramsey Sunday, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver replied:

“I’m hopeful. I say prayers every night, right? We talk to God. But the one thing I do know about Jalen is it’s not for a lack of work ethic, right? He’s doing everything he can in the training room to try to put himself out there. We just got to be smart and cognizant that we do have two games in whatever that is a little over a week. So we’ll see.”

As Weaver mentioned, the Dolphins open the season with two games in five days. The Buffalo Bills come to town on Thursday. That compressed schedule will influence the team’s decision on when and how to use Ramsey.

Beyond his elite playmaking ability, Miami’s defense would lose a lot of versatility if Ramsey cannot play. Weaver was expected to use Ramsey in a bunch of ways this season.

“I think you’re cognizant of it, just because you know the potential like eraser effect he can have,” Weaver said.

“But we’re not making wholesale changes if he doesn’t play. Let’s put it that way. You obviously can’t replace a Jalen Ramsey with any one particular player. I think it just requires the full defense as a whole to pick up that slack. I think we’re more than capable of doing that.”

While Ramsey remained out of practice, the Dolphins on Thursday did get back offensive tackle Terron Armstead, defensive tackle Calais Campbell, and outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips, who all got veteran rest days on Wednesday.
