Louisville guard Mikel Brown Jr. missed his fourth consecutive game as the No. 20 Cardinals were defeated 80-76 by the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday. Brown sustained a lower back injury during the Cardinals’ win against the Memphis Tigers on Dec. 13.
In Brown’s injury-enforced absence, sophomore guard Adrian Wooley has stepped into the breach as the Cardinals have gone 2-2 even as they’ve tipped off their ACC schedule.
Mikel Brown Addresses Injury Concerns Ahead of Duke Clash
In a lengthy post on X on Monday, Brown clarified that he did not sustain his injury in the weight room, while praising the efforts of Louisville’s head strength and conditioning coach Eli Foy to get him healthy.
“Just to set the record straight, my back injury DID NOT happen in the weight room,” Brown tweeted. “This situation is something that happened before the Memphis game and I took some hard falls in the Memphis game that made it worse. Coach Eli is my guy, he hasn’t and never will do anything to put my health at risk.
“He has been the main person working with me every day to get back on the court as soon as possible! I had to let everyone know the truth. I will be back soon.”
Brown was a five-star recruit in the class of 2025, and after an impressive start to his college basketball career, he has been tabbed to be a lottery pick during the 2026 NBA Draft.
Pat Kelsey Rules Out Brown From Duke Clash
During his weekly ACC coaches call, Louisville coach Pat Kelsey revealed that despite making strides in his rehabilitation, Brown would not be available for the marquee clash against the No. 6 Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday.
“He will not play on Tuesday. He’s champing at the bit,” Kelsey said. “I mean, he wants to be out there so stinking bad. You can tell. It’s just been a couple of disappointing setbacks as we kind of tried to ramp him back up and practice full go to see if he could sustain throughout the game.
“We feel really good that he’s going to come around sooner rather than later. He’s working his butt off. Nobody is spending more time in the training room. We haven’t been able to get the discomfort and the spasms and things like that to settle down. We thought we were turning the corner, but over the last several days, not having him do anything full speed.”
The 2026 NBA Draft hopeful is averaging 16.6 points on 38.1% shooting from the floor and 26.8% shooting from beyond the arc, 3.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Cardinals in 10 games played this season.
