John Calipari, Tommy Lloyd Target Reveals Reason for Commitment Delay After Canceling Auburn Visit

Top-10 national prospect Caleb Holt is in no rush to make his college decision. The five-star shooting guard canceled an official visit to Auburn in early October and now says he wants to watch how the 2025-26 season unfolds before committing. He holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Kentucky, John Calipari’s Arkansas, and Baylor, with Kansas and Houston also involved. Alabama and Kentucky appear to be the strongest contenders heading into the winter.

Why Is Caleb Holt Waiting to Commit After Canceling Auburn Visit?

In a recent interview with On3, Holt laid out his plans, saying he needs to see how programs develop during the season before locking in.

“I just want to see how the season is. You know, coaches change. Things change in the season. So I don’t want to commit anywhere and then something change, then I’m back at square one trying to figure out what I want to do. When I commit somewhere, I want to be there. And when I’m there, I’m all in.” Caleb said.

The Prolific Prep senior also wants clarity on which recruits end up at the schools he’s considering. Fit matters to him, both with the coaching staff and his future teammates.

“I want to see who commits where, who I’m playing with, who I want to play with. Can I see myself playing with them? Have I played with them already? There is a lot of concepts that go into it. So for me to choose the best fit for me, I feel like the best thing is the wait and see and evaluate. Because once you’re in, you’re in. There’s no getting out. And I don’t want to be in the transfer portal or decommit.” Caleb said.

Holt canceled his Auburn official in October but has visited Alabama, Providence, Tommy Lloyd’s Arizona, and Kentucky this fall. He returned to Kentucky for Big Blue Madness on October 11 after taking an official visit in mid-September. Alabama moved its official up from October to mid-September as programs battle for the guard.

What Does Holt Want in a Program?

Holt’s decision will come down to relationships. He made it clear that trust with the head coach sits at the top of his list.

“I’d say the biggest thing is trust and the relationship with the head coach. Because if you don’t have that, that’s who you’re going to play there for. So if I can’t go talk to my coach comfortably about anything then I know it’s not for me…I’m more of a people person.”

The Alabama native starred at Buckhorn before transferring to Grayson in Georgia for his junior year. He averaged 18.2 points and 8.7 rebounds before moving to Prolific Prep in June. He’s also a three-time USA Basketball gold medalist and the 2025 adidas Eurocamp MVP after leading Team 3SSB Select to the title.

Holt’s approach reflects a player who’s learned from watching others rush into decisions. He’s betting that patience now will pay off with the right fit later.

Schools like Alabama and Kentucky will keep recruiting him hard, but they’ll have to wait along with everyone else while he watches how the season plays out and which teammates might join him on campus.
