Darryn Peterson was the top-ranked high school basketball player of the 2025 recruiting cycle. Peterson committed to the University of Kansas, and so far through two games, the freshman is averaging 21.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and three assists.
However, it appears that Peterson will be missing time due to an injury, and this has fans in disarray. Considering he’s the top freshman in the nation and one of several first-round pick candidates in the 2026 NBA Draft, Jayhawk fans are feeling a certain way about Peterson missing time. Here’s what they’re saying.
Fans Go Against Darryn Peterson’s Injury Recovery
In an interview with the press on Friday, November 15, Bill Self said the following regarding Peterson’s injury:
“We’re not obviously gonna have him, you know… at least for the immediate future. I just don’t know… how long that’ll be.”

Definitely not the news Jayhawk fans want to hear, and they immediately began reacting to the news.
With NBA aspirations, fans wonder if it is worth it for him to come back or not. He’s already shown what he can do and could still be valued as a top pick. One fan said this about Peterson, “It would be smart of him to sit out the rest of the year and just prepare for the draft.”

Another fan agreed with the previous statement, saying, “He’s prob done playing for U and will get ready for the draft.”
Another fan brought up the idea of him sitting out for the rest of the year, but he also introduced the concept of name, image, and likeness, implying that it is weak for a player to sit out when they feel sore and still receive millions. He specifically said, “Is the new thing players sit out a 30 game season because they feel sore, get paid millions, then leave at before the semester ends for the NBA?”

Another fan admits that Peterson is “fleecing” Kansas and wonders if he’ll return for the tournament. They write, “So dp fleeced KU? Will he be ready by the big 12 tourney? Asking for a friend.”

Finally, one fan thinks it’s unfair that Peterson will still be paid and that it is so ridiculous that the money should be returned. They said, “Do we get money back from this nonsense?”
Whenever Peterson returns, it is apparent that Kansas fans are unhappy about the injury for a myriad of reasons.
