Super Bowl Champion Calls Out How Media Protects Patrick Mahomes Unlike Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, and Josh Allen

Patrick Mahomes had the second-worst playoff game of his career since 2019 during Sunday’s crushing Super Bowl 59 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. His 17 passing yards in the first quarter was his worst mark of the season and foreshadowed the barrage that was to come. The Kansas City Chiefs lost 40-22 in a contest that quickly got out of hand.

However, the Chiefs quarterback has largely been spared of media criticism, and former Super Bowl champion James Jones believes that if Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, or Jalen Hurts had had a similar game, the media would be “killing them.”

James Jones Tears Into Patrick Mahomes Over Humiliating Super Bowl Performance

Jones spoke during the latest episode of “The Facility” and didn’t mince words about Mahomes’ performance in the Big Game, which was the quarterback’s second-worst performance of the 2024 season. Given the stakes, it could justifiably be called the worst game of his career.

The former Green Bay Packers wide receiver felt the three-time Super Bowl champion was spared of criticism from the media, suggesting that the same wouldn’t have been the case for other top quarterbacks. Those aforementioned superstars all finished within the top five of PFSN’s QB+ metric in 2024, while Mahomes ranked 10th.

“He did not play well. And if this were a game with Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, or Josh Allen, we would be killing them. It wouldn’t be about stats. And the same goes for Patty—he did not play well last night. The Chiefs did not have answers.”

The Eagles’ defense sacked Mahomes six times, the most he has taken in his career. Jones suggested it was humiliating for him as the Philadelphia defense looked far more potent than most suggested.

“We praise the Chiefs all year long. They had no quick game, they had no special desire, you got four rushers coming at you, and the Eagles haven’t been known for sacking a quarterback. They have just been for playing really good defense and taking the ball away, not sacking the quarterback.”

The co-host also tried to end the Mahomes vs. Tom Brady G.O.A.T. debate, arguing that the seven-time Super Bowl champion would have been able to find answers for the Eagles’ defense.

“Kansas City Chiefs all day long had no answers, and if they did have, Patrick Mahomes wasn’t getting the ball out of his hands. They had drop passes. I had never seen the Chiefs look like that on the offensive side of the ball. They got beaten down, especially the best player in the world. Because Tom Brady would have had some answers for that.”

Mahomes finished 21-of-32 for 257 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. The stat line doesn’t look terrible, but both picks came in the first half, where Mahomes went into the locker room with just 33 passing yards. It was an inexplicably poor performance that will permanently stain his resume and add a new chapter to the G.O.A.T. discourse.
