Los Angeles Chargers Free Agency Predictions: Top Available RB Coming to LA to Replace Austin Ekeler?

The Chargers have big decisions to make with Jim Harbaugh now at the helm. Here are three free agency predictions for the 2024 period.

The Los Angeles Chargers are entering their first offseason with Jim Harbaugh running the show, meaning the accomplished head coach gets to tackle NFL free agency for the first time since the 2014 offseason when he was with the San Francisco 49ers.

Let’s take a look at three free agency predictions for the Harbaugh-led Chargers.

Los Angeles Chargers Free Agency Predictions

The Chargers have about $22.1 million in cap space to work with at the moment. Yet, that number could go up and give LA even more financial flexibility.

Severing ties with Joey Bosa, Khalil Mack, and Mike Williams could free up close to $60 million for the Bolts. But even with their current cap situation, the Chargers are in position to make these moves.

Sign Tony Pollard Amid Austin Ekeler’s Situation

There are signs Austin Ekeler is officially on his way off the Chargers’ roster. That said, Los Angeles will need a back with a similarly versatile skill set to replace him.

Fortunately for LA, Tony Pollard is unlikely to generate an overly competitive market for his services. It’s not just because Pollard plays a position that’s gone down in financial value, but he’s also coming off a relatively underwhelming 2023 season with the Cowboys.

Pollard averaged a career-low 4.0 yards per carry while experiencing some residual effects from his January 2023 fibula fracture and high ankle sprain.

New offensive coordinator Greg Roman has always prioritized a stout running game dating back to his 49ers tenure under Harbaugh. LA presents a prime destination for Pollard to continue his career and perhaps recapture his 2022 Pro Bowl form.

Add Kenny Moore To Give CB Room Needed Help

No unit was hit harder with injuries and inconsistency than the Bolts’ cornerback position. J.C. Jackson was traded, Asante Samuel Jr. had his ups and downs, and a lack of depth and talent after Samuel didn’t help.

Names like L’Jarius Sneed and Jaylon Johnson are obviously enticing. But the Chargers would have to really open their wallets to grab one or the other. And considering how the Jackson experiment failed, there may be some hesitancy from the front office to spend big money on a cornerback.

That’s where Kenny Moore may come in. Moore may not be a household name among the 2024 class of free agent cornerbacks, but he’s a one-time Pro Bowler and a well-respected veteran. He’s also coming off a 2023 season that saw him return two of his three interceptions for touchdowns. Moore is capable of providing a needed veteran presence in the CB room.

Alohi Gilman Gets Lured Back

Despite playing for a defense that imploded under Brandon Staley, Alohi Gilman put together career bests in interceptions, forced fumbles, and tackles in 2023, doing so while starting a career-high 14 games.

All that should convince the Bolts to bring him back for another season.

While he’s among the list of Chargers free agents, Gilman is at the bottom of PFN’s best free agent safeties available, meaning he may have a tepid market.

Gilman became a breakout starter, but it was on a bad defense. And in a class with Xavier McKinney, Antoine Winfield Jr., and Kamren Curl, Gilman is likely not going to be at the top of teams’ wish lists for safety help compared to that trio, very likely giving the Bolts enough leverage to re-sign him.
