You never want to predict a team will go winless in the NFL, but the Lions are now staring down the barrel of doing exactly that in 2021.
[bet-promo id=”149453″]If Detroit does, it would be the third time the Lions have failed to win a game in an NFL season (1942, 2008). The Lions were the first team to go winless in a 16-game season, and now they could be the first in a 17-game season as well.
Their performance against the Eagles was an abject disaster. After throwing everything at the Rams and still losing, it is somewhat understandable there could be an element of demoralization the following week. One intriguing aspect is that the Lions are actually 4-4 against the spread this season. Also, they have alternated covering and not covering, and by that pattern, this is the week they should cover.
Pittsburgh’s 2021 odyssey
The Steelers are 5-3 this season, and it is somewhat hard to work out exactly how they have managed it. Their offense ranks in the bottom 10 of the league in several efficiency and overall output statistics. However, their defense has been a top-12 unit in terms of points and yards allowed, giving them chances to win games.
In terms of their record against the spread, they are actually 3-5 after failing to cover on Monday Night Football. As favorites, they have yet to cover a single one of their four games, which does not make great reading heading into this one. Their Week 9 game was only the second time this year the over has hit.
Lions vs. Steelers prediction
It is so hard to see how the Lions can win any of these games right now. Both sides of the ball are struggling to make an impact and that is a terrible recipe. Even against a struggling offense like the Steelers, it is difficult to imagine how they restrict them under 20 points this week.
It is equally hard to see their offense getting much beyond the 20-point mark themselves. That is a feat they have not managed since Week 1. However, while the Steelers should win in a low-scoring game, the Lions have proven they can scare teams. They did it against the Ravens, Vikings, and Rams this season. Pittsburgh should have the experience with Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger, but this could be another “kitchen sink” game for the Lions.
