Kyle Shanahan’s Salary and Contract: Career Earnings for 49ers Head Coach

Kyle Shanahan signed a contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. How much is he paid per year, and how much he has earned over his career?

Since taking over the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, Kyle Shanahan has become one of the most successful NFL head coaches. Making the playoffs in four of his seven seasons in charge, the 49ers head coach has developed the Bay Area team into one of the most feared in the NFL.

Having reached two Super Bowls as a head coach, Shanahan is one of the highest-paid head coaches in the league. How much will he earn in 2024?

Kyle Shanahan’s Salary

The salaries of NFL head coaches aren’t usually made public, and that often means we have uncertainty over how much a coach is paid. Most reports place Shanahan’s salary at around $10 million, but Sportico estimates that he earns as much as $14 million per season. The reason for the uncertainty is that the 49ers HC signed a contract extension in September 2023, but the amount was not officially reported.

Since becoming head coach in San Francisco, Shanahan has earned at least $54.5 million without bonuses or incentives, proving just how valuable he is to the organization.

ESPN reported on Sept. 22, 2023, that Shanahan and GM John Lynch signed multi-year contract extensions that are expected to run through 2027. The extension marks the 49ers head coach’s second contract extension with the organization after having previously extended his original deal in 2020.

Speaking to the media after the official announcement, Shanahan shared that the deal was wrapped up before the season and that he’d already celebrated with his family. He also spoke about how being in a stable environment is everything a coach can ask for.

“I feel very grateful,” Shanahan said. “Just being a coach anywhere for a long time, I know what that means, and extremely grateful to have that opportunity and mainly for my family to be somewhere for so long, which is cool.

“I really like where we live and really like the people we work with, and they’re committed to giving us a chance to go for it every single year, and that’s all I could ever ask for.”

The contract extension increased Shanahan’s salary from his previous multi-year deal. When the 49ers HC signed his first contract extension in June 2020, Adam Schefter reported that the six-year deal made “Shanahan one of the NFL’s five highest-paid head coaches.”

That first extension was estimated to have been worth around $10 million per season, dramatically up from the $3.5 million per year deal Shanahan signed for in 2017.

Schefter’s tweet about Shanahan becoming a top-five highest-paid head coach at the time is the reason for the $14 million estimation. At the time, the highest-paid coaches in the NFL were Bill Belichick ($25 million, New England Patriots), Sean Payton ($18 million, Denver Broncos), Pete Carroll ($15 million, Seattle Seahawks), and Sean McVay ($15 million, Los Angeles Rams).

With Carroll and Belichick leaving their respective teams Shanahan has potentially jumped up to third on the highest-paid NFL coaches list.
