Kansas City Chiefs News, March 19: President Mark Donovan Says Chiefs Could Move, Dolphins TE Praises Travis Kelce, and More

Would the Kansas City Chiefs ever leave Kansas City? Travis Kelce was praised by a former teammate. All of that and more in Chiefs news.

The Kansas City Chiefs could be looking for a new home, or is it just an empty threat from a team executive who is looking for public money?

Kansas City Chiefs News Today

There’s a question on the upcoming April 2 ballot that asks if voters would want to extend a 3/8 cent sales tax until 2064. That would amount to 38 cents per every $100 that residents spend in Jackson County, Missouri, and would raise around $2 billion over the next 40 years.

The continued tax revenue could be the difference between keeping the Chiefs and Kansas City Royals inside the county and specifically inside of the city, or leaving to go elsewhere. While the Chiefs would look to use the money to renovate GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, the Royals would build a new ballpark downtown with the funds.

Chiefs president Mark Donovan spoke to KSHB 41’s Kevin Holmes about the situation. When asked if the “options include leaving Kansas City,” Donovan responded with confirmation.

“I think they would have to include leaving Kansas City,” Donovan said. “But our goal here is, we want to stay here. And we’re willing to accept a deal for the county to actually stay here.”

Dolphins TE Jody Fortson Praises Travis Kelce

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is intense on the field and a superstar off of it. One teammate is singing his praises for his constant support.

Jody Fortson spent the last five learning the tight end position with the Chiefs. The former Valdosta State had a long, arduous journey to becoming a contributor with Kansas City, as he was a practice squad member in 2019, cut from the active roster, and placed on the practice squad again. He finally made the team on Aug. 31, 2021.

Throughout his entire journey, Kelce was there for him. That’s something that Fortson will remember for the rest of his career.

“Travis Kelce is my favorite teammate of all time. On any level, Pop Warner, high school, or college, Travis is my favorite teammate,” Fortson said to Miami media. “Not only because he took his time trying to teach me the role of being the tight end, but because of how a great person he is, he didn’t even have to.”

The 28-year-old TE signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Dolphins on March 14. Of that, $425,000 of the $1.2 million is guaranteed. Now, he’ll have the opportunity to use what Kelce displayed to him on the stage with Miami.

“He just showed unconditional love and knowledge for the game,” Fortson continued.

“Being in a room and Kelce, it probably not even probably it sent me four light years of where I would have been had I not had him, arguably having the greatest of all-time in that room, being able to learn and see how he’s attacking different routes and why he views coverage like this and why he sees well, how he’s able to find the holes and other stuff like you’re not able to get that unless you’re with somebody that knows that.”

Fortson has played in 19 games in his career, making one start. He has 14 receptions for 155 yards, four touchdowns and has a 77.8% catch percentage on his targets.
